The Far South Coast Landcare Association is seeking an assistant to support the Coastal Weeds Project Officer. This casual position is for 15 hours per week (2 days) over a four-month period, with the possibility of extension. Our preference for this recruitment round is to appoint an Aboriginal candidate with cultural and spiritual links to the lands and the People of the Far South Coast of NSW. Background
We’re seeking an enthusiastic, reliable, and motivated individual to join our team as a part-time Coastal Weeds Project Assistant. This role offers the opportunity to work along the South Coast beaches, focusing on identifying and removing invasive coastal weed species. The work involves extensive walking and requires keen observation skills.
We provide training in weed and native plant identification, and hope the role will enable the successful candidate to build skills in GIS mapping, networking, weed control, and environmental data collection.

Role objectives and responsibilities
Position/role objectives: The Coastal Weeds Project Assistant will support the Project Coordinator in:
- Conducting a coastal weed sweep between Wonboyn and Moruya
- Mapping and removing priority coastal weed species
- Collaborating with contractors and volunteers during sweep operations
- Collecting and entering environmental data
- Participating in marine debris collection and data entry
- Add observations and data to a variety of citizen science apps
Requirements and applicant information
Eligibility and location
- Must have own transport to work
- Must be based in the Bega Valley (preferably in or near Bega)
- Must be adaptable with work hours (weather may affect scheduling); accommodation will be arranged where possible
- Must have a strong work ethic and be physically fit; the project is physically demanding, involving significant beach walking, hand weed removal, and carrying loads
Selection criteria
1. Demonstrated punctuality and reliability, with commitment to working two consecutive days per week
2. Strong interest in natural resource management, including plant ID and weed control
3. Enthusiasm for working in a small team and taking initiative
4. Physically fit and healthy – capable of walking at least 10 km a day
Remuneration and benefits
Remuneration: Hourly rate: $35.15 (Under the Miscellaneous Workers Award Level 3 MA000104, inclusive of 25% casual leave loading). Superannuation: Additional 12%. Travel and other allowances where appropriate.
Benefits: Skills development in native and introduced plant identification, GIS mapping, bush regeneration and weed control techniques, data collection, and networking with partner agencies.
Reporting and relationships
Reporting/supervision: You will work under the guidance and supervision of the Coastal Weeds Project Officer.

Links to existing programs: The Coastal Weeds Project has run for 17 years and partners with councils, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Local Land Services, NSW Marine Estate, and Local Aboriginal Land Councils.
