Mainframe system programmer (cics/mq/zos)

Sydney
Green Light Worldwide
Posted: 31 March
Offer description

Green Light have an exciting opportunity for a high‐calibre and experienced Mainframe System Programmer (CICS/MQ/zOS) specialising in CICS, CICSPlex SM and IBM MQ to join one of our delivery partners. This role provides end‐to‐end involvement across installation, configuration, performance tuning, engineering and support within a large, multi‐region CICS/MQ environment.

The environment makes extensive use of CICSPlex SM for centralised management and workload routing, and the account is heavily invested in MQ, requiring strong depth of experience. You will work with AU/NZ and offshore-based teams and must be capable of carrying start‐of‐day support independently due to timezone coverage requirements.

As a Mainframe Consultant, you will be responsible for system analysis, configuration, testing and operational support across CICS Transaction Server, CICSPlex SM and IBM MQ. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver enhancements, support integration activities, resolve complex issues and ensure the reliability, resilience and performance of mission‐critical workloads. You will participate in all phases of the IT delivery lifecycle.

The role is predominantly 4 days onsite, with the potential to shift to 3 days onsite later in the project. This team supports end‐to‐end delivery for a major enterprise customer operating high‐volume transactional workloads.

Responsibilities:

* Install, upgrade and maintain IBM CICS Transaction Server and IBM MQ on z/OS using SMP/E.
* Configure and customise CICS regions including TOR, AOR and FOR, and administer CICSPlex SM for multi‐region management, workload routing and centralised administration.
* Configure MQ queue managers, queues, channels, clusters and queue sharing groups, supporting high‐volume messaging workloads.
* Monitor and tune CICS and MQ performance using RMF/SMF, OMEGAMON, Sysview or equivalent.
* Analyse and resolve complex system incidents including dump analysis, abends, message delays, queue depth problems and channel failures.
* Design and support high‐availability configurations using CICSPlex SM, MQ clustering and workload balancing features.
* Participate in disaster recovery exercises and validate resilience and failover patterns.
* Define and manage CICS resources such as programs, transactions, URIMAPs and PIPELINEs.
* Define and manage MQ objects including queues, topics, channels and routing structures.
* Provide technical guidance to application and integration teams on CICS–MQ interaction, resource design and performance best practices.
* Collaborate with z/OS system programmers, Db2 DBAs, IMS teams, network engineers and security staff to ensure stable end‐to‐end platform operation.
* Implement RACF or ACF2 security for CICS and MQ resources and datasets.
* Develop automation, alerting and operational tooling using REXX, JCL or z/OSMF workflows to improve reliability and reduce manual intervention.
* Maintain documentation, configuration baselines and operational procedures for deployments and recovery.
* Support daily operations across AU/NZ business hours, independently managing incidents at start of day.

Requirements:

* Extensive experience as a Mainframe System Programmer specialising in CICS Transaction Server and IBM MQ on z/OS.
* Strong hands‐on experience with CICSPlex SM including multi‐region setup, routing, workload balancing and centralised system management.
* In‐depth knowledge of IBM MQ administration including queue manager configuration, clustering, QSGs, channels and troubleshooting.
* Strong understanding of z/OS fundamentals including JCL, TSO/ISPF, SMP/E, JES2, SMF/RMF and IBM utilities.
* Experience with performance tooling such as OMEGAMON and Sysview.
* Ability to perform advanced diagnostic work including dump analysis and incident triage in complex environments.
* Experience working with Db2, IMS and other mainframe subsystems in large enterprise environments.
* Proficiency in automation and scripting using REXX, JCL or z/OSMF workflows.
* Familiarity with modern integration patterns involving APIs, Java/COBOL services or cloud-adjacent platforms.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across AppDev, database, network and security teams.
* Strong ownership, reliability and capability to perform support independently during early‐day coverage windows.
