The Opportunity

Partnered with our host University of Queensland, we are looking for a motivated Parks and Gardens Apprentice to join the team while completing a AHC31024 Certificate III in Parks and Gardens.

You will have a genuine interest in horticulture, landscaping and outdoor maintenance, and any previous exposure to gardening or a relevant pre-vocational background such as a Certificate II in Horticulture will be highly regarded.

This position is full-time and based at the University of Queensland Gatton campus, supporting the presentation and maintenance of landscaped areas and outdoor spaces across site.

Job Details

University of Queensland's Gatton campus combines a proud agricultural heritage with expansive grounds, gardens and outdoor spaces in a unique rural setting. This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to build practical horticultural skills while helping maintain and enhance a large and visually impressive campus environment.

You will be mentored by experienced staff while completing a blend of on-the-job training and formal study, building practical skills in garden and grounds maintenance, planting, pruning, irrigation and safe use of horticultural equipment.

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

* Assist with maintenance of landscaped areas including lawns, gardens, trees and outdoor spaces across the campus
* Support planting, pruning, irrigation maintenance and general horticultural works under supervision
* Assist with pest and weed control in accordance with environmental and safety guidelines
* Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment and yard tools under supervision
* Assist with campus landscape improvement and beautification projects while maintaining safe and tidy work areas
* Participate in structured training, maintain safe work practices, and complete apprenticeship training requirements as directed

About You

The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach and a genuine interest in building a career in parks, gardens and horticulture.

You will ideally have a positive attitude, be physically fit, and enjoy working outdoors in varying conditions as part of a team. The role involves onsite work and local travel to and from work areas, with exposure to hazards such as weather conditions, dust, noise and vegetation.

In addition to these qualities, you will ideally:

* Hold a current driver licence
* Be reliable, proactive and able to work well in a team-oriented environment
* Be physically fit and willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
* Have basic horticultural knowledge and a genuine interest in parks and gardens work
* Have the ability to operate gardening equipment safely, or the willingness to learn
* Hold a Certificate II in Horticulture or similar, which is desirable but not essential
* Have the ability to pass a Medical, Drug and Alcohol Screen, and Police Check
