Alice Springs Hospital has an exciting position for a Specialist interested in general surgery that specialises in the care of Aboriginal people in a remote environment. A collegiate muti-specialty surgical team, we have resident specialists Ophthalmology and ENT with several other regular visiting sub-specialists and ready telehealth support. Alice Springs is located 1,500km from the next surgical facility and serves a radius of 750km. The medicine is complex with 50% of the work being emergency admissions. Little of the work is routine or predictable. Around 70% of the patients are Aboriginal with an interesting mixture of trauma and elective general surgery. Soft tissue infections, broad spectrum trauma patients including stab injuries, motor vehicle accidents, vascular injuries and acute pancreatitis, complex abdominal surgery offers a wide range of opportunities for a general surgeon.
We are looking for a consultant with at least 2 years post fellowship experience who is looking to make a significant difference to a grateful community. You will have an interest in developing and improving services through teaching, training and supervision and a safety and quality approach. Many opportunities for research and expanding the relationship with Flinders University or the Baker Institute are available.
We welcome applicant seeking who may wish to have a composite position with part time or full-time options for engagement (0.5 – 1.0 FTE).
Alice Springs Hospital has a catchment area of over 1,000,000 km2. We care for some of the nation's most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country
Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place suited to doctors with a sense of adventure and those interested in indigenous health issues, not generally seen by most doctors in Australia
Alice Springs Hospital is a 183 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on indigenous and remote health as a result of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities. Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery. Our medicine is complex, including good old fashioned "hands-on" care.
