Description:
Meta Steel is a leading Australian manufacturer of precision-engineered, pre-assembled light gauge steel framing systems for the construction industry. Our products are termite-proof, non-combustible, durable, and 100% recyclable, supporting sustainable and future-focused building solutions.
Due to continued business growth, we are seeking two skilled Welding Engineering Technicians to support fabrication quality, welding procedures, and production efficiency within our structural steel fabrication operations.
Role Overview:
The Welding Engineering Technician provides technical support to fabrication and welding operations by implementing welding procedures, ensuring weld quality, and improving production processes. The role works closely with fabricators, welders, assemblers, and engineering staff to maintain compliance with design specifications and Australian Standards.
This is a technical role focused on welding processes, quality assurance, and production support rather than routine production welding.
Key Responsibilities:
Welding Process & Technical Support
* Assist in developing, implementing, and improving welding procedures for light gauge steel frame fabrication.
* Set up, calibrate, and maintain welding equipment and automated welding systems.
* Monitor welding parameters to ensure consistency, efficiency, and compliance with specifications.
* Recommend improvements to welding methods, productivity, and material performance.
Technical Guidance & Production Support
* Provide technical guidance to fabricators, welders, and assemblers regarding welding techniques, joint preparation, fit-up, and assembly sequencing.
* Assist production staff in interpreting welding symbols, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications.
* Troubleshoot welding and fabrication issues to minimise defects, rework, and delays.
* Support training and continuous improvement of fabrication and assembly practices.
Quality Assurance & Inspection
* Inspect welded components and assemblies to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, tolerances, and Industry Standards.
* Identify weld defects, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
* Conduct visual inspections and assist with non-destructive testing (NDT) processes where required.
* Maintain welding inspection records and quality documentation.
Engineering & Drafting Coordination
* Liaise with draftspersons and the Light Gauge Steel Coordinator to ensure weld details align with fabrication drawings.
* Provide feedback to engineering and drafting teams regarding manufacturability and weld performance.
Welding Demonstration & Technical Fabrication (Non-production)
* Perform welding for procedure testing, demonstration, prototype fabrication, and rectification of critical weld defects where required.
* Assist in trialling new welding techniques, materials, or equipment.
Workplace Safety & Compliance
* Ensure welding operations comply with workplace health and safety regulations and safe work procedures.
* Promote safe handling of equipment, materials, and hazardous substances.
* Participate in safety inspections and continuous improvement initiatives.
Production Efficiency & Continuous Improvement
* Support workflow efficiency and lean manufacturing initiatives.
* Assist in resolving fabrication challenges to maintain production schedules.
* Contribute to maintaining high-quality standards across all steel framing products.
Requirements - Skills & Competencies
Essential
* Minimum 3 years’ experience in welding engineering technology, fabrication, or structural steel manufacturing.
* Relevant qualification or Industry Trades Licence in welding, fabrication, materials engineering technology, or related field.
* Strong knowledge of welding processes (MIG, TIG, resistance/spot welding).
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
* Understanding of Australian or International Standards and quality control procedures.
* Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to work collaboratively within a production team.
Desirable
* Experience in light gauge or structural steel manufacturing.
* Familiarity with non-destructive testing methods.
* Experience with automated or robotic welding systems.
* Mandarin language skills (advantageous).
* Forklift licence or additional trade certifications.
