Overview
Profectus is seeking Expressions of Interest from Mainframe specialists to support anticipated opportunities across multiple Australian Government departments. These roles are expected to contribute to the development, support, and modernisation of critical enterprise systems operating within large-scale mainframe environments.
Opportunities are most likely to be based in Canberra, with potential requirements emerging across other jurisdictions nationally. We are interested in hearing from professionals across a range of experience levels who bring capability across legacy and contemporary mainframe technologies, and who are looking to contribute to the ongoing stability, performance, and evolution of essential government platforms.
These roles offer the opportunity to support nationally significant programs, working within structured, secure environments alongside multidisciplinary teams spanning application development, data, infrastructure, and integration domains.
Key Responsibilities
* Contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of mainframe-based systems within enterprise environments
* Support analysis, design, and implementation of solutions across mainframe platforms
* Assist with system integration, data processing, and batch or transactional workloads
* Contribute to troubleshooting, optimisation, and performance improvement of applications and system
* Support testing, release, and deployment activities across mainframe environments
* Assist in maintaining system documentation, processes, and technical artefacts
* Collaborate with internal teams including development, infrastructure, and business stakeholders
* Contribute to modernisation, transformation, or uplift initiatives involving legacy systems
* Support continuous improvement of system reliability, scalability, and maintainability
Required Experience
* Experience working within IBM mainframe or similar large-scale enterprise environments
* Exposure to mainframe technologies such as COBOL, JCL, DB2, IMS, or equivalent
* Experience supporting or developing applications in structured or regulated environments (e.g. government, defence, or large enterprise)
* Understanding of batch processing, transactional systems, or data processing workflows
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
* Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively
* Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable Experience
* Exposure to mainframe modernisation or transformation initiatives
* Experience with data engineering, integration, or reporting within mainframe environments
* Familiarity with DevOps, automation, or release management practices in legacy environments
* Understanding of system integration patterns across mainframe and distributed systems
* Experience working with large, complex datasets
* Exposure to government frameworks, standards, or delivery environments
* Relevant tertiary qualifications or industry certifications
Security Requirements
* Must be an Australian Citizen
* Must have the ability to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) clearance
* Existing NV1 or NV2 clearance highly regarded
Working Arrangements
* Predominantly Canberra-based roles within secure government environments
* Onsite work is expected for most opportunities, particularly during onboarding
* Hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on role and agency requirements
* Potential opportunities may arise in other locations across Australia
* Engagements may support both short-term requirements and long-term programs
