Saltbush is looking for a compassionate and culturally aware First Nations Female Mentor to join our team in Darwin.
The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) First Nations Program is structured into male and female cohorts, each supported by dedicated Art Tutors and Mentors. An experienced Trainer works across both groups, guiding participants through their educational and artistic development. This holistic approach fosters a culturally safe and supportive learning environment that builds confidence, communication, and digital literacy skills, all while completing accredited training.
Position Details:
* Location: Darwin
* Employment Type: Fulltime Fixed Term until 31 March 2028
* Excellent Remuneration: $85k + 12% super + salary packaging + 5 weeks annual leave
* Reports To: Skills Education and Employment (SEE) Management Team
* Hours: Normal business hours, with flexibility for additional hours as needed
* Travel: Occasional travel to other Saltbush service locations
This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8 (1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).
This position is only open to female applicants due to a genuine occupational qualification (GOQ) under Section 30 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) and Section 35 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1992 (NT), as permitted by our contract for the SEE First Nations Art and Literacy Project to ensure culturally appropriate service delivery.

The Role: As a Mentor within the SEE team at Saltbush, you will learn and apply a strengths-based approach to goal setting and planning, using mentoring, coaching, reflective conversations, and encouragement to facilitate opportunities and learning to achieve outcomes that make a difference for individuals within an arts and literacy context.
This role requires an understanding of the multiple and complex barriers that individuals may face in accessing employment. You will work with a diverse range of participants, and your actions must always be culturally appropriate, respectful, and collaborative. The role is designed to build your capacity to provide sustained, meaningful support to individuals who have experienced significant challenges in workforce participation.
Additionally, you will undertake the Saltbush 11055NAT Course in Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Mentors to further develop your skills and knowledge.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
To ensure success in your role as a Mentor, you will:
Mentoring & Participant Support
* Provide one-on-one mentoring and coaching to participants, supporting their personal and professional development.
* Collaborate with Art Tutors and Trainers to develop individual learning and employment plans with clear, measurable goals.
* Assist participants in overcoming challenges and barriers to learning, employment, and personal growth.
* Facilitate access to external support services as needed, ensuring cultural sensitivity and appropriateness.
Program Engagement & Delivery
* Support the implementation of the SEE program by engaging participants in activities that foster skill development and confidence.
* Participate in program marketing efforts, gathering and sharing success stories via social media and other communication channels.
* Assist in the screening, interviewing, and selection of program participants.
* Contribute to the design and delivery of culturally relevant mentoring sessions and workshops.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
* Work closely with the Senior Mentor, Art Tutors, and Trainers to ensure a holistic approach to participant support.
* Build strong relationships with community organisations, employers, and service providers to enhance participant opportunities.
* Act as a liaison between participants and external services, fostering engagement and collaboration.
Monitoring & Reporting
* Maintain accurate records of participant progress, attendance, and engagement in digital systems for program evaluation.
* Provide timely reports and updates to the Senior Mentor on participant achievements and challenges.
* Contribute to program reviews and continuous improvement efforts.
Essential Desirable Criteria:
1. Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
2. Willingness and ability to successfully complete the full accredited Saltbush 11055NAT Course in Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Mentors within the 6-month probationary period.
3. Strong mentoring and coaching skills, with the ability to apply strengths-based approaches that foster independence and resilience.
4. Deep understanding of the cultural, social, and employment barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, with a commitment to culturally safe practices.
5. Demonstrated problem-solving skills, resilience, and patience when working through complex challenges.
6. Effective teamwork and collaboration with trainers, tutors, and stakeholders.
