Australia's natural and cultural heritage is unique. Our land and seascapes are distinctive, home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world, and to some of the oldest living cultures on earth. The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). We work to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world, demonstrating to all why these places are so special, and inspiring communities to become more invested in their care and future.

The Strategy and Indigenous Protected Areas (SIPA) Branch manages delivery of the Indigenous Protected Areas Program and provides strategic oversight, advice, guidance, and capability support for the management of Australia's Commonwealth parks, reserves and gardens, with a strong focus on supporting Indigenous land and sea management and protection of cultural heritage.

The Parks Australia Cultural Heritage Section develops and delivers strategies, systems, guidance and capacity building activities to support Commonwealth areas to better understand, protect and manage cultural heritage and cultural heritage values, through:

* Developing guidance and strategies to support Parks Australia ensure compliance with cultural heritage obligations and legislative responsibilities,
* Providing support to operational parks and gardens to implement required uplift activities,
* Delivery of parks wide improvement activities which enhance cultural heritage protection – including staff training and capacity building, and
* Providing technical advice on cultural heritage conservation and management practices and approaches.

The key duties of the position include

As an effective member of the Cultural Heritage Section, you will be required to:

* Support the planning and implementation of key projects relating to uplifting cultural heritage management capacity within Parks Australia; and
* Support the development of cultural heritage policies and procedures across Parks Australia.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

* Supporting the development and maintenance of key documentation for cultural heritage management compliance with legislative and international requirements, including development and supporting delivery of policies, standard operating procedures, guidelines and other operational guidance.
* Supporting the preparation of written heritage advice and assessments that are consistent with heritage legislation and relevant heritage management principles.
* Supporting implementation of cultural heritage requirements across all Commonwealth parks and reserves through development of site-specific tools, guidance and training material.
* Providing advice and capability uplift activities to staff consistent with legislative requirements, international commitments and relevant Parks policies.
* Contributing to reports, briefs, ministerial correspondence and talking points to provide high quality advice to the Senior Executive, Boards of Management, the Director of National Parks and the Minister.
* Building strong partnerships and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to support policy development and support systems for cultural heritage management.
* Preparing and monitoring of project documentation, including undertaking procurement and project management in accordance with departmental guidelines.
* Contributing to a respectful, open and high-performing team culture.

Eligibility

Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
