In December 2024, we began providing health, mental health, and wellbeing services across the onshore Immigration Detention network. Our team of nurses, general practitioners, and allied health professionals offer a range of healthcare services, including health assessments, chronic disease management, health promotion, wound management, immunizations, and other primary health interventions. HCA also launched a 24/7 Virtual Care Centre (VCC), offering remote healthcare through telehealth and video consultations to enhance onsite care for detainees
Job Description
The General Practitioner plays a vital role in leading and managing the delivery of primary healthcare services to immigration detainees within detention centres.
This position demands a strong foundation in general practice and primary healthcare, along with specialised knowledge of the unique health needs within the detention environment—particularly in areas such as mental health and substance use. A key responsibility of the role is to provide clinical supervision and serve as the primary escalation point for health staff working within the immigration detention centre.
This is a permanent part-time, on-site position (3 days per week – Wednesday to Friday), with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement in the future.

We're seeking a healthcare professional with a strong understanding of public health issues, particularly those impacting vulnerable populations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A sound understanding of ethical considerations and confidentiality in healthcare delivery is also critical.
This role requires someone who can confidently navigate and adapt to a complex and often challenging healthcare environment, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to high-quality care.
You will have a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent), full registration with the Medical Board (without restrictions) and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or equivalent. It is required that you maintain continuous Fellowship (FRACGP/FACRRM/FARGP or similar).
