Provisional Fellowships at Launceston General Hospital (LGH)
The Role:
The LGH is a vibrant and busy large regional hospital in Northern Tasmania offering two provisional fellowship positions. These positions provide a perfect platform for transitioning from senior registrar to consultant practice. The anaesthetic department provides services to around 13,000 elective and 5,000 acute cases per year covering adult, obstetric and paediatric services in both main theatre, day procedure/endoscopy and birthing suite.
General Provisional Fellowship training includes consolidating and extending clinical experience in general surgery (including upper GI & hepatobiliary), obstetrics, paediatrics, major orthopaedics, ENT/head & neck, major plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, robotic surgery, ophthalmic surgery & acute pain management. Mastering advanced techniques in regional anaesthesia is also a core component of the provisional fellowship year. Provisional Fellows are supported to participate in teaching UTAS medical students and pre‐vocational trainees.
Multiple opportunities exist to pursue clinical support roles aligned with ANZCA's roles of a Specialist Anaesthetist. Fellows are encouraged to engage in education, research, leadership and health advocacy.
As well as general fellowship training, in 2027 the LGH is offering special provisional fellowships in Perioperative Medicine and Simulation.
Perioperative Medicine: The LGH is an accredited clinical immersion site for the ANZCA's Chapter of Perioperative Medicine course, ready to provide high‐quality POM training by a dedicated team of perioperative anaesthetists and physicians, with completion of the full training program possible during the 12‐month POM PFY. Applicants wishing to undertake the Perioperative Medicine course should indicate this intention in their application.
Simulation: The Simulation PFY will join the rapidly expanding simulation department under the guidance of the Sim Lead, with links to all procedural disciplines and strong connections to the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Simulation opportunities include training of anaesthetic consultants, trainees, JMOs and medical students in theatre and interdisciplinary team environments (e.g., obstetric, paediatrics) as well as in‐situ simulation & 'ninja sim' training exercises. The department manages its own well‐resourced simulation lab used for skills training (e.g., awake fibreoptic intubation, emergency response or mini‐simulations). The PF will participate in scenario writing, preparation/briefing, running manikin technology and developing debriefing/feedback skills with a view to contributing to the ongoing development of the simulation service.
