The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Port Manager to lead our Christmas Island (CI) port operations. Reporting directly to the Business Manager – Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) this role will ensure compliance with the service agreement for the IOT with the Commonwealth Government whilst performing the statutory functions of the Harbour Master.
This is a residential position based on Christmas Island.
You will be a forward-thinking leader with strong operational expertise, strategic planning capability, and a proven ability to manage complex working environments. With a clear focus on safety and people, you will drive operational excellence through continuous improvement, and a commitment to client and community.
This is a high impact and strategic role overseeing Port control, asset management and projects.
About the position
The Port Manager CI will play a pivotal leadership role in overseeing end-to-end operational activities within the Indian Ocean Territories region. This role is responsible for driving a high-performance culture with a strong focus on safety.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Drive productivity to maximise utilisation of resources throughout the operation, control costs, deliver service excellence and maintain a focus on strategic initiatives.
* Proactive management of relationships with Commonwealth, Community and Port Users.
* Project Management actively planning, costing, scheduling, and delivering to requirements.
* Ensure that all vessel operations are conducted in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and legislative obligations.
* Ensure operations are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with safety and quality standards.
* Provide specialist maritime technical input to IOT's safety and environmental management plans.
* Take accountability for safety and financial reporting, and resource allocation across multiple priorities.
* Foster a culture of engagement, collaboration, and continuous improvement across all levels of the operation.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have considerable senior management experience with demonstrable skills in operations, project management and maintenance within a marine environment. Additionally with a demonstrable record of safety and financial performance, you will possess well developed communication and relationship building skills.
Other key skills and experience will include:
* Highly developed decision-making and process driven capability, and commitment to drive outcomes & results.
* Marine experience – coxswain or similar with a relevant trade qualification such as mechanical engineer or diesel fitter being highly regarded.
* Understanding of financial drivers, cost control and operational budgeting.
* A desire to live in a remote, multi-cultural community.
Ultimately, you will be a proven communicator with energy and drive along with highly developed organisational skills and a proven ability to multitask and prioritise.
