About the Company
Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) is the professional member association for the English teaching profession. It is the national umbrella body of the eight Australian state and territory associations for the teaching of English and is a not-for-profit (NFP) incorporated association and registered NPF charity. Governed by a National Council, AATE has the primary purpose of serving the member associations through strategies which advance their interests and that of the English education community. AATE achieves this in part through conferences and seminars, publications, online workshops for English teachers, research, advocacy and representation.
About the Role
The General Manager (GM) position, available due to the July 2026 retirement of the incumbent, is also the association's Executive Officer (EO), and reports to the National Council of AATE. You will be responsible for the leadership and management of all operational aspects of the association as well as the AATE's professional learning and research project work. You will also have oversight of a range of external projects for other professional associations, managed by AATE.
Duties include
* Manage service contracts and relationships with state-based associations and the Council
* Organise large and small in-person and web-based meetings, conferences and seminars
* Lead and manage the small administrative team and instill a positive, collaborative culture
* Prepare annual budgets, statutory reports and otherwise contribute to the planning and transparency for and of AATE
* Monitor and manage cashflow and implement strategies for optimal trading results
* Prepare and lodge funding submissions
* Manage publications contracts, distribution, sales, marketing and stock control
* Act as the EO and ensure sound governance
* Strategic planning for expansion of AATE business and outcomes in line with the strategic plan
Skills & Experience
* Excellent interpersonal, communication skills
* Strong commercial acumen and experience applying accounting principles and managing change
* Experience in marketing in an online environment
* Experience in overseeing publishing for print and online
* Experience in event organisation and working with volunteers would be highly regarded
* An appreciation for teaching, in particular the teaching of English would be desirable, however the GM will not be involved in the development of nor have influence in education policy
