COOK UP KINDNESS BECOME A VOLUNTEER KITCHEN ASSISTANT AT VINNIES
Your contributions as a volunteer directly or indirectly enable such valuable services as home visitations that provide emergency relief assistance, recovery-focused mental health services, a range of services to prevent or alleviate homelessness, financial counseling, migrant and refugee programs, distribution centre operations and retail shops, and advocating for a greater understanding of social justice issues.
This role provides an opportunity to contribute valuable time and skills to a service that promotes wellbeing, encourages healthy eating, and supports consumers through the provision of high-quality, nutritious meals. Under the direction of the Cook and Service Lead, the Kitchen Assistant helps ensure the efficient operation of the kitchen and the timely delivery of meals, in accordance with Food Safety and Infection Control standards, as well as the Food for Thought initiative.
Key Responsibilities
* Food Preparation and Service
o Assist the Cook and Service Lead with basic food preparation, portioning, and plating of meals.
o Support the delivery and serving of meals to consumers in a timely and professional manner.
* Kitchen Operations Support
o Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen, dining, and storage areas.
o Wash, sanitise, and store utensils, dishes, and kitchen equipment appropriately.
o Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing food and supplies according to Food Safety guidelines.
* Compliance and Safety
o Follow all Food Safety, Hygiene, and Infection Control procedures and standards.
o Report any equipment faults, safety hazards, or incidents to the Cook or Coordinators promptly.
* Teamwork and Communication
o Work collaboratively with the Cook and Services team and other team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
o Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and consumers.
o Support a positive, inclusive, and safe kitchen environment.
* Other Duties
o Perform other kitchen-related tasks as delegated by the Cook and Services Lead within the scope of the role.
o Assist with special functions or events as required.
Skills, Experience and Attributes
* Food Handling Knowledge: An understanding of safe food preparation, hygiene, and storage practices in line with Food Safety and Infection Control standards.
* Kitchen Experience: Previous experience working in a kitchen, café, canteen, or similar environment is desirable but not essential.
* Teamwork: Ability to work cooperatively with others and follow directions from the Cook and Services Team.
* Communication Skills: Friendly and respectful communication style when interacting with staff, and consumers.
* Time Management: Reliable and able to complete delegated tasks within set timeframes.
* Attention to Detail: Maintains high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and food presentation.
* Adaptability: Willingness to take on a variety of tasks and adjust to changing priorities or needs.
* Work Ethic: Dependable, punctual, and committed to contributing to the smooth running of the kitchen.
* Empathy and Respect: Demonstrates understanding, patience, and care when supporting consumers with Mental Health and from diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
* Health and Safety Awareness: Understands and adheres to workplace health and safety procedures at all times.
