We are currently seeking an experienced Electrical Project Engineer – Automation & Controls to contribute to the successful delivery of a major capital program. This role focuses on automation systems, control architecture, and instrumentation engineering, with a hands-on approach to execution and commissioning.
About The Role
As an Electrical Project Engineer specialising in Automation and Controls, you will be responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of automation and control systems within defined project work packages. You will support the Engineering Manager and Area Leads to ensure that design, procurement, installation, and commissioning activities align with project scope, standards, and timelines.
This is a dynamic, technically challenging role ideal for an engineer who thrives on solving complex problems in real industrial environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver end-to-end engineering for control systems, including design, specification, functional safety, and integration
- Develop and review control philosophies, logic diagrams, instrumentation schedules, and system architecture
- Prepare and evaluate automation-related procurement packages and vendor documentation
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure cohesive delivery across engineering streams
- Provide on-site technical support during installation, loop checking, and commissioning
- Participate in HAZOP, SIL, and control system validation workshops
- Support FATs/SATs and ensure systems meet compliance, safety, and performance targets
- Maintain documentation and ensure traceability of logic changes and commissioning outcomes
- Assist with PLC and SCADA configuration and troubleshooting as required
Qualifications And Experience
- Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Mechatronics or Control Systems Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in automation and instrumentation engineering within heavy industry or major capital projects
- Strong technical background in PLC, SCADA, and instrumentation systems (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider preferred)
- Experience in commissioning industrial automation systems, including burner management and interlocks
- Familiarity with Australian electrical and safety standards and IEC 61511
- Exposure to control system integration in complex or continuous process plants
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
