What you'll be doing
As a Visiting Medical Officer – General Surgeon, you will provide high‑quality, contemporary specialist surgical services to patients at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and, where required, across other MLHD facilities.
Key responsibilities include:
* Delivering evidence‑based general surgical care to achieve optimal patient outcomes
* Participating in the consultant on‑call roster
* Supporting and supervising junior medical staff and contributing to education and training
* Actively participating in clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety programs
* Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, hospital leadership, and external partners to ensure continuity of care and sustainable service delivery
* Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) essential
* Colorectal expertise preferred.
* Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) accreditation highly desirable
* Contributing to a safe, respectful, and high‑performing clinical environment aligned with NSW Health CORE values

Selection Criteria
* Holds registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in General Surgery and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
* Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrated significant experience relevant to General Surgery practice and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
* Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
* Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
* Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD Values, goals and strategies.
