We connect the widest possible public to contemporary art through our Collection, exhibitions, events, creative learning and access programs.
Our evolving Collection of over 4,500 artworks is the only public collection in Australia dedicated to the work of living artists, with over a third represented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, the MCA raises over 80% of its revenue each year through donations and commercial activities to deliver its artistic and engagement programs.
Overview of the position
Reporting to the Building Services Manager (BSM), the Maintenance Officer is responsible for general maintenance, coordination and the smooth operation of the MCA buildings and services and supporting the BSM in larger building related projects and contractor liaison.
Being responsible for all general maintenance duties such as minor building repairs, small building and painting projects and minor electrical work, the position is also required to organise larger or more technical repairs through external contractors when required, in consultation with the BSM.
The Maintenance Officerwill also assist with operating the MCA Security and Building Management Systems. This can include manning the Security Office and responding to alarms through the emergency or Building Management Systems. The position holder will also be a key member of the MCA’s WHS and security response team.
Tasks and responsibilities of the position
General Maintenance
Complete minor repairs throughout the building, including, but not limited to:
Light tubes and globe changes
fault finding throughout the building (e.g. tripped electrical circuits, blocked plumbing issues/repairs, etc.)
minor hardware repairs (doors, windows, furniture, equipment etc.)
minor painting & patching requirements.
preventative maintenancetasks to building plant and machinery
Inspect gutters and downpipes and remove any debris.
Assist the BSM to arrange, coordinate and manage the activities of contractors (including Tradesman and suppliers) involved in maintenance, repairs and building services (security, cleaners and mechanical services) and larger or technical repair jobs.
Assist the BSM with the oversight and maintenance of:
Air-conditioning plant room and maintenance of chillers
Rooftop intake and exhaust systems, gutters and stormwater drains
All automatic and manual doors around the building
External & Internal fabric of the building including cleaning of windows and doors
Support the BSM to manage and deliver specific building projects.
Building Security
Assist with the operation of security access control system for swipe keys and lift & door controls within the building are operating and programmed accordingly, and ensure accurate records are maintained.
Assist the Facilities Coordinator & Security Manager as/when required to maintain the security of the MCA and manage the loading dock.
Conduct appropriate inductions for and sign in all contractors when working at the MCA Building via the Security Office.
Report any issues with the Security Systems to the Facilities Coordinator & Building Services Manager.
Building Management Control System (BMCS) Software
Monitor and respond to all alerts from the BMCS.
Report any issues with the BMCS to the BSM and assist with the rectification of these.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Act as Deputy Chief Warden for the MCA.
Be a key point of contact in the event of emergency evacuation and assist with evacuation needs.
Ensure appropriate safety and security inductions for staff and contractors.
Coordinate and attend regular staff training for emergency evacuation & fire safety procedures.
Coordinate loading dock activities and ensure security of loading dock via security personnel.
Backup Assistance
Provide assistance to the BSM in all aspects of managing the MCA building and services, including overseeing external contractors.
Purchase and order equipment in accordance with organizational policies.
Key selection criteria
previous experience in a similar role utilising practical skills such as painting/general handy person
previous experience working with a vast array of trades and contractors
good personal administration and organisational skills
good communications skills, with the ability to communicate consistently and provide updates on maintenance issues to key stakeholders
be a self-motivated, all-round handy person who is willing to learn and employ new skills
willingness to undertake additional training where required including new systems.
tertiary qualifications in an engineering/building discipline and/or relevant experience
previous experience working in the visitor attraction/cultural sector
knowledge of current of WHS requirements, building codes and Australian standards
knowledge of asset and facilities management practices.

Terms and conditions of employment
This is a full-time, permanent position reporting to the Building Services Manager.Some work out of normal hours Monday – Friday, (7am–3pm) will be required to cover the MCA’s operations or business requirements with TOIL available.
Salary package includes:
annual leave: 4 weeks
personal leave: 10 days
superannuation: 11.5% super payments ( in accordance with the Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992 ).
