Overview
Our client is a large, multi-site organisation with a significant national workforce and a highly operational, time-sensitive environment. Following a period of strong growth, the business is focused on strengthening its payroll function, with particular emphasis on risk, compliance, and process improvement. In parallel, they are undertaking a Payroll and Time & Attendance system implementation, making this a critical hire within the finance function.
The Role
Reporting to the CFO, this Payroll Manager role will take full ownership of the end-to-end payroll function, managing a fortnightly payroll for 700+ employees within a highly timesheet-driven environment. The role combines operational leadership with a strong focus on compliance, risk management, and process improvement, alongside involvement in an active payroll and time & attendance system implementation.
Key responsibilities
* Overseeing end-to-end fortnightly payroll processing for 700+ employees
* Managing and supporting 1–2 direct reports within the payroll team
* Ensuring payroll compliance across modern awards, tax, and superannuation
* Reviewing payroll outputs, reconciliations, and exception reporting prior to sign-off
* Identifying and mitigating payroll risk, strengthening controls and processes
* Managing payroll audits, reporting, and legislative requirements
* Supporting workforce data integrity across payroll and time & attendance systems
* Partnering with Finance and HR on workforce reporting, analysis, and planning
* Contributing to payroll and time & attendance system implementation
* Driving continuous improvement across payroll processes, systems, and workflows

The Successful Candidate
* Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll for a similar sized workforce (700+)
* Strong experience in timesheet-driven payroll environments
* Demonstrated ability to manage payroll risk and ensure compliance
* Solid understanding of modern awards, payroll legislation, tax, and super
* Previous experience in a Payroll Manager or senior payroll leadership role (Team Leaders looking to step up are encouraged to apply)
* Exposure to payroll or time & attendance system implementations is highly regarded
* Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities
* Confident leading a small team and supporting ongoing development
