Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Leading Hand (Welding) to take a proactive, hands-on role supervising and mentoring our welding team across a range of marine and defence projects. This position plays a critical part in maintaining high-quality workmanship, upholding strong safety standards and supporting the successful delivery of project outcomes.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical welding capability, leadership confidence with the ability to communicate effectively with both the workforce and management team.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and supervise welders and fabricators across workshop and on-site activities
• Ensure all welding activities meet required quality standards, specifications and project deadlines
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld procedures and job documentation accurately
• Conduct inspections to confirm work is completed safely and to the required quality standards
• Provide hands-on guidance and mentorship, assisting with complex welds as required
• Plan daily work schedules, allocate tasks and report progress to supervisors or project managers
• Identify, troubleshoot and resolve welding-related issues to minimise delays
• Maintain accurate records of progress, materials and labour hours
Skills and Experience:
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in a leading hand or similar leadership role within a welding, engineering or marine environment
• Ability to work effectively across both workshop and site-based environments
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a multicultural and diverse team.
• Solid understanding of welding processes, industry codes and safety requirements
• Excellent organisational, communication and leadership capabilities
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications:
• Trade Certificate in Fabrication Engineering, Welding or Boiler Making (Certificate III or equivalent)
• Current Construction White Card
• Valid Driver's Licence
• Ability to obtain a National Police Clearance and meet Defence access requirements
