Fabrication workshop manager

Offer description

We're seeking an experienced and hands-on Fabrication Workshop Manager to lead our welding and fabrication operations at GaardTech Pty Ltd, a company working in the Australian Defence industries. In this role, you'll oversee a skilled team, maintain quality and safety standards, and ensure projects are delivered on time and to specification. You'll work closely with project managers and engineers while also providing technical guidance and mentoring.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead, supervise, and coordinate a team of welders, fabricators, and apprentices.
* Oversee fabrication jobs from drawings through to completion.
* Create and manage weld maps, fabrication schedules, and WPS documentation.
* Conduct welder qualification testing and manage weld/material traceability.
* Review drawings and ensure all work meets quality and specification requirements.
* Liaise with project managers and engineers to coordinate workflow.
* Manage yard and logistics operations to ensure efficient material handling, dispatch, and deliveries.
* Enforce workplace safety procedures and ensure compliance with Australian Standards (AS1796, AS3992, AS4041, AS4037, AS4458, AS1554, AS2885, ASME IX, B31.3).
* Assist with NDT requests and review reports for compliance.
* Support HR functions including training, mentoring apprentices, and performance management.
* Participate in scheduling and process improvement initiatives.
* Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in system assembly.

Mandatory Qualifications & Experience

* Trade qualification in Fabrication or Boilermaking.
* Minimum 5+ years' experience in welding and structural/piping supervision or workshop management.
* AS1796 Certificate 10 Welding Supervisor (preferred) or equivalent IIW qualification.
* Strong trade technical skills in STT (GMAW-S), FCAW, GTAW, and MMAW/SMAW processes.
* Proven ability to read and interpret complex fabrication/engineering drawings.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); CAD/Navisworks advantageous.
* Forklift and/or crane ticket beneficial.
* Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage diverse teams.
