Analytical Chemist
Full-time – 38 hours per week.
Location: Gladstone, QLD
Salary : $110,000 p / a plus superannuation.

This role will be part of the laboratory team and responsible for providing technical expertise to the broader laboratory team and operations, ensuring that all safety, environmental, product quality and customer specifications are met. The person will be required to use their technical and chemistry knowledge to assistance with training of staff, maintenance of equipment, development and improvement of sampling and analytical methods, testing of chemicals, statistical analysis of instrument performance, solve quality and specification problems, and assist in producing products in accordance with the customer needs, existing legislation and industry standards.
We are looking for a self-motivated individual who is willing to roll up their sleeves in order to get things done whilst engaging with a dynamic team of engineers, laboratory technicians, chemists and analysts.
Key responsibilities include :
- Contributing to the testing and manufacturing of ultra-high-purity alumina products, including trihydrate and nano alumina serving industries such as electronics, energy storage, and advanced materials.
- Conducting experiments and tests to identify the chemical composition, particle size and reactive properties of High Purity Alumina products throughout the manufacturing process.
- Analysing and conducting research to develop theories, techniques and processes, and testing the reliability of outcomes under different conditions.
- Developing practical applications of experimental and research findings.
- Testing products for impurities, particle size variation, and chemical composition.
- Deliver reliable, accurate and timely analytical results to the business.
- Advising on new methods of processing to increase quality, purity and reliability of the products.
- Developing quality control procedures and safety standards for the testing and manufacture of High Purity Alumina products.
- Examining samples to assess for purity, chemical composition, particle shape and reliability.
- Co‑ordinating laboratory testing processes and directing staff in correct testing and analysis methods and reporting.
- Maintain Laboratory equipment, ensuring reliability and high availability.
- Development and improvement of laboratory methods. Chemical testing including quality control testing of raw materials and finished goods.
- Assist in the development of technical skills for the laboratory team.
- Undertake nonconformance investigations.
- Undertake statistical analysis of instrument performance.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to operating guidelines using SOPs, instrument manuals and supervisory guidance.
- Troubleshoot issues as they arise throughout the laboratory.
- Handle and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to best practice and safety protocols.
- Accurately record all data and results in specified forms (both paper and electronic).
- Reviewing product failure data and implementing laboratory tests to identify possible causes and providing assistance to overcome any problems.
- Collaborating with the engineering team to identify pollution control problems in the plant and implement solutions to address them.
- Coordinate with the laboratory team to ensure quality control actions are carried out in preparing final products.
- Ensure health and safety policies, procedures and processes are followed and adhered to.
Qualifications and Experience :
- BSc (Chemistry) or Tertiary qualification in similar Science related field.
- 3 years laboratory experience.
- Experience using various laboratory instruments including – ICP‑OES, Auto Titrators, XRD, TOC, etc, preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Evidence of being proactive and using initiative to solve problems.
- Evaluation of statistical data to derive items such as LOD LOQ, MDL, etc.
- Background in the understanding of quality as it relates to ISO17024.
- Demonstrated experience with industrial protected work procedures and practices
- Ability to work independently.
