System Administrator - Microsoft SQL Server (APS 6 Equivalent)
Cleared are working with ASD as they require an APS 6 equivalent System Administrator to work as part of a team to undertake, under general direction, moderately complex to complex Microsoft SQL Server database administration and associated virtual server fleet sustainment, as outlined in the Job Duties and Responsibilities.
This opportunity sits within a highly secure environment supporting an intelligence agency, where system reliability, performance and data integrity are critical. The role involves working with a fleet of Microsoft SQL Server systems, contributing to both operational stability and ongoing improvement through automation, monitoring, and structured problem solving.
The position spans multiple environments, including production, QA and test, with responsibility for ensuring systems are configured correctly and maintained to deliver consistent performance and availability. A key focus is identifying and resolving system and database issues, while also establishing repeatable processes that improve long-term outcomes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
* Evaluate and test new system releases (including patches). Plan and coordinate the installation of new versions of system software.
* Action customer requests, including ad-hoc backup, migration and restoration jobs, and diagnose and resolve issues by following standard operating procedures; where none exist, document the procedure taken for repeatability and consistency.
* Manage system and database configurations across numerous environments (e.g. production, QA, and test).
* Monitor database activity and resource usage, undertaking proactive database performance tuning or as requested by the customer.
* Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of relational databases and replication technologies: Microsoft SQL Server Database and Always-On Availability Groups.
* Develop, implement and maintain moderately complex to complex scripts and automation capabilities to assist in the implementation, integration, and maintenance of the system software.
* Document daily work (steps taken, reasons and outcomes) to ensure transition of knowledge to the ASD Officers and to enable repeatability of procedures and compliance with relevant standards, including Commonwealth record keeping responsibilities.
* Attend meetings as required, in line with role responsibilities and as directed by team and section management.

Essential criteria
* 1.SYSP 4 Monitors system software metrics and adjusts configurations for optimum availability and performance. Reviews system software updates and identifies those that merit action. Configures system software for required functionality and performance. Investigates and resolves system software problems, requesting action from supplier if required.
* 2.DBAD 4 Develops and configures tools to enable automation of database administration tasks. Monitors performance statistics and create reports. Identify and investigates complex problems and issues and recommends corrective actions. Performs routine configuration, installation, and reconfiguration of database and related products.
* 3.PROG 3 Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result. Monitors and reports on progress. Identifies issues related to software development activities. Proposes practical solutions to resolve issues. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.
* 4.ASUP 3 Follows agreed procedures to identify and resolve issues with applications. Uses application management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics. Carries out agreed applications maintenance tasks.
* 5.SCAD 3 Investigates minor security breaches in accordance with established procedures.
