Experienced Government Communications and Engagement Specialist required to support a fast paced, dynamic team
Your new company
A Government department dedicated to moving and connecting people, places, goods and services - safely, efficiently and effectively - is seeking a high‑performing and innovative Communications Officer to join their small and agile team. This is a 12‑month temporary contract with possible extensions, based in Cairns.
Your new role
Reporting to the Program Support Manager, you will play an integral role in supporting the efficient delivery of the North Queensland Region's Queensland Transport and Roads Infrastructure Program (CYRP). You will provide strategic communication services to technical and professional staff across community engagement, media relations, issues management, public affairs and stakeholder relationship management.
You will also be responsible for:
* Developing strategies for stakeholder management and consulting with a wide range of interest groups.
* Coordinating community engagement for road infrastructure projects, including providing project managers with ongoing strategic communications advice, and developing and implementing communication strategies.
* Assisting the communications team leader in providing communication advice and support to the District Director, managers and district staff in media and issues management, risk assessment, community engagement and communication strategies using appropriate tools.
* Managing the preparation of communication materials, including researching and writing media releases, ministerial briefings, newsletters, flyers, display materials and project documents.
* Developing, planning and managing key communication activities such as displays, expos, career markets, road commissionings, launches, media opportunities and other events as required.
* Developing and implementing communication strategies, activities, procedures and policies that support the district's strategic objectives.
* Complying with the WH&S Act, Regulations and Department Policy.
* IAP2 Certificate in Engagement will be highly regarded.
* Demonstrating the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
What you'll need to succeed
We are seeking an insightful individual with experience in a strategic communication or community engagement role, preferably within government, as this is critical to your success.
* Your attention to detail will be exemplary, and you will have experience working in high‑pressure environments with competing deadlines.
* You will possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write engaging and innovative content aligned with organisational values.
* You will have demonstrable experience creating and maintaining successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
* While not mandatory, relevant qualifications and/or experience with Adobe Suite will be advantageous.
* Experience working on infrastructure‑focused or community engagement programs will be highly regarded.
