The Opportunity
A well established and high performing mining operation located in the Hunter Valley is looking to appoint a capable and hands on Geologist or Coal Quality Engineer. This is a key operational role that manages coal quality from digger to stockpile to wash plant. It directly influences production performance and product outcomes.
With several dig fleets active and one central pit, the operation requires a geologist who understands coal behaviour, quality drivers, and the importance of daily engagement with operations, planning, and processing.
About the Role
You will be part of the short-term planning team and report to a technically strong supervisor with a geology background. This is not a geotechnical role, and it is not a modelling or desktop position either. This role is operational and practical, focused on maintaining consistent quality while feeding valuable insights back to the operation.
Each day begins with time spent in the pit, working closely with the production and logistics teams and making sure the right coal is mined and directed correctly to stockpiles or the CHPP. The remainder of the day focuses on upcoming mining blocks, coal recovery planning, and reconciliation of quality and tonnages.
You will be the site leader in coal quality data. The role offers direct access to systems, operational teams, and decision makers.
Key Responsibilities
* Coordinate daily with production, logistics, and CHPP teams to align coal feed with quality requirements,
* Monitor ROM coal and manage quality risks across the operation,
* Lead reconciliation and coal accounting across mining blocks and stockpiles,
* Interpret and manage data through Vulcan and Geobank (transitioning from TaskManager),
* Provide forward looking insights to short term planners and support production strategy.
About You
* Tertiary qualified in Geology, Mining Engineering, or a similar discipline,
* Around two to five years of site-based experience, ideally in coal quality or operational geology,
* Confident working in a fast-paced production environment and building relationships across departments,
* Clear communicator who is proactive and takes ownership of their work,
* Exposure to Vulcan or Geobank is an advantage, but not essential.
