The position supports meeting the requirements for Paediatric training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Where you'll be working The Paediatric ward provides a Level 4 Paediatric service to patients aged from birth to 16 and up to 18 years in some instances, depending on presenting illness and history.
The ward admits patients living within the Richmond/Clarence catchment area.
The unit is staffed by specialist Paediatric Nurses and Paediatricians and works with allied health professionals who provide additional support services.
Our services include: Medical patients: respiratory, gastrointestinal, seizure disorders, feeding problems, meningitis/encephalitis, minor cardiac problems, endocrine disorders, metabolic disorders, skin infections/disorders, autoimmune disorders, mental health stabilisation, and eating disorders.
Surgical patients: ENT, Orthopaedic, hernia's and related conditions, emergency surgery, infections and abdominal surgery, trauma care, head injury, and minor burns.
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.
The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Primary purpose of a Trainee in Paediatrics The primary purpose of a Trainee in Paediatrics is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, patients of the Paediatric Service.
The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborative manner.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee's skills, knowledge and experience.
The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO).
All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner.
All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
