Position Overview
An exciting opportunity is available for a Junior to Mid-Level Backup Support Engineer to join a structured enterprise environment supporting critical backup and recovery services.
This role will suit an IT professional with 2–5 years of experience in infrastructure or backup support who is looking to strengthen their expertise in enterprise data protection, operational support, and disaster recovery processes within a government-focused program.
You will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and integrity of backup platforms while collaborating with senior engineers and cross-functional technology teams.
Key Accountabilities
Enterprise Backup Administration
* Monitor, manage, and maintain enterprise backup platforms including Veritas NetBackup and Commvault.
* Proactively review job performance, investigate failures, and ensure backups complete in line with defined SLAs.
* Support restore activities across servers, applications, and databases while ensuring minimal business disruption.
* Assist in maintaining backup policies, schedules, and retention configurations.
Operational Support & Incident Response
* Provide Level 1 and Level 2 operational support for backup and recovery incidents.
* Perform structured troubleshooting and gather diagnostic information prior to escalation.
* Contribute to identifying patterns in recurring failures and recommend improvements.
* Ensure incidents are logged, tracked, and resolved in accordance with ITIL processes.
Disaster Recovery & Resilience
* Support disaster recovery documentation and maintain up-to-date recovery runbooks.
* Participate in recovery simulations and testing exercises to validate system resilience.
* Assist in ensuring backup environments meet defined RTO and RPO targets.
Patch & Platform Maintenance
* Coordinate and implement patches and version upgrades for backup platforms and supporting operating systems.
* Work closely with infrastructure and vendor teams to plan maintenance activities.
* Validate platform stability post-patching and document all changes in line with governance requirements.
Governance & Documentation
* Maintain accurate technical documentation relating to backup architecture and operational processes.
* Ensure compliance with security frameworks and internal data protection standards.
* Support internal and external audit activities where required.
Team Collaboration
* Engage with infrastructure, cloud, storage, and application teams to understand backup requirements.
* Provide clear communication to stakeholders regarding restore requests, outages, and service updates.
* Contribute to knowledge sharing within the team environment.
Skills & Experience
* 2–5 years’ experience in backup administration or infrastructure operations.
* Practical experience supporting Veritas NetBackup and/or Commvault within enterprise environments.
* Solid understanding of enterprise backup methodologies including retention management, scheduling, and restore validation.
* Experience supporting Windows and Linux environments.
* Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capability.
* Ability to obtain and maintain Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.
Highly Regarded
* Exposure to VMware and public cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
* Familiarity with automation or scripting tools such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
* Experience supporting SQL, Oracle, or application-aware backups.
* Background working within structured IT service management environments.
Eligibility Requirements
* Australian Citizenship is mandatory.
* Must hold or be eligible to obtain Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.
