About the opportunity
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) conducts safety regulation of civil air operations in Australia, Australian civil airspace, and the operation of Australian aircraft overseas. Safety, Risk and Intelligence (SRI) is a branch of Air Navigation, Transformation and Risk (ANTR) Division, responsible for analyzing safety data and managing enterprise and aviation safety risks. The branch develops risk profiling to enhance CASA's and industry's decision-making and also develops regulations, guidance materials, and standards related to safety and risk management.
The Aviation Risk Oversight (ARO) Section leads the development of the Aviation Safety Scorecard and supports aviation risk analysis, safety risk training, and industry interactions. It leverages the Safety Data Analysis section for complex analysis tasks.
The Section Manager Aviation Risk Oversight reports to the National Manager Safety, Risk and Intelligence (Chief Risk Officer) and provides high-quality advice on risk management strategies, supporting CASA branches and stakeholders. This is a technical leadership role managing multidisciplinary teams on complex projects.
Our ideal candidate
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Tertiary qualifications in Risk Management, Aviation Management, SMS, or related fields.
- Proven experience managing a specialist team applying risk management in operational settings.
- Over 5 years of recent operational risk management or SMS experience within aviation or similar safety-critical industries.
- Extensive knowledge of Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs), Civil Aviation Regulations (CARs), and relevant guidance materials and legislation.
- Familiarity with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
- Experience in developing risk policies, standards, and support tools aligned with aviation needs.
- Ability to work independently within established regulatory frameworks and procedures.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills, with the ability to apply technical knowledge flexibly.
- Excellent negotiation, facilitation, and communication skills to manage stakeholder views, including at senior levels.
The position is ongoing (permanent), with a salary range of $168,157 - $178,398, based in Brisbane or other CASA office locations.
Additional desirable qualifications
Postgraduate qualifications, familiarity with the Commonwealth Risk Management Policy, experience designing aviation risk management systems, and a Class C driver's license are preferred.
