Role Overview

This role is responsible for delivering specialist protection and control design across substation and power system projects. Acting as a key technical leader, you will provide engineering expertise across the full project lifecycle—from scoping and design through to delivery—supporting both internal teams and external stakeholders. You will play a critical role in strengthening technical capability, improving design standards, and ensuring successful project outcomes across distribution, sub‐transmission, and transmission networks.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Technical Delivery
* Deliver detailed protection and control system designs for substations, industrial facilities, and grid connections.
* Provide specialist technical advice aligned with relevant standards, regulations, and safety‐in‐design principles.
* Review and approve engineering designs, drawings, and technical submissions.
* Ensure compliance with applicable statutory, regulatory, and industry requirements.
* Apply engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges and optimise design outcomes.
Leadership & Technical Guidance
* Provide mentorship and technical leadership to engineers and design teams.
* Support capability uplift across the team by promoting best‐practice design approaches.
* Lead problem‐solving activities and guide teams through complex technical decisions.
* Contribute to the development of engineering standards, procedures, and design frameworks.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
* Identify and implement improvements to design processes, systems, and methodologies.
* Support the adoption of new technologies, including digital substations and IEC 61850 architectures.
* Drive efficiency, quality, and innovation across engineering delivery.
* Monitor industry trends and contribute to maintaining a competitive technical capability.
Stakeholder Engagement
* Collaborate with internal project teams, clients, and external stakeholders to support project delivery.
* Provide technical input during project planning, estimation, and execution phases.
* Contribute to strategic initiatives to enhance team performance and service capability.
Requirements.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
* Professional engineering accreditation (preferred).
* Chartered or registered engineer status (advantageous).
Technical Expertise
* Strong experience in protection and control system design within power networks.
* Knowledge of IEC 61850, SCADA systems, and modern substation technologies.
* Experience with protection relay configuration across major vendors (e.g., SEL, Siemens, GE, ABB).
* Proficiency in power system analysis tools (e.g., PowerFactory, PSS/E, SINCAL).
* Strong understanding of fault analysis, including symmetrical components.
Experience
* ~10+ years' experience in the power/utilities sector.
* Demonstrated experience in substation and network design projects.
* Experience in a technical leadership or senior engineering role.
* Strong background in protection settings and system design compliance.
