We are seeking several volunteers to join us here at OzFish.
OzFish Unlimited is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the millions of Aussie recreational fishers take control of the health of their rivers, lakes and estuaries and shore up the future of the sport they love.
OzFish Unlimited partners with fishers and the broader community to invest time and money into the protection and restoration of our waterways, counteracting decades of degradation.
The program is called Creekwatch and the position involves coming out each Wednesday to monitor several creek systems in the Townsville region.
One position during the day is focused on photography.
This would involve taking photos/videos at an event.
As we are a non-for-profit organization, we rely on support from the public to continue our work.
We create social media posts displaying our work from all events, this is to promote what we do and generate interest in OzFish.
Volunteer Qualities:
Someone who enjoys the outdoors and wants to be apart of looking after their waterways.
An interest in Citizen science.
Keen to learn about the waterways around the Townsville region and to share any knowledge past and present about the health of the local ecosystem.
Community engagement and educating peers on the data we are collecting.
Activities include:
Macroinvertebrate sampling
Water quality monitoring
Fish sampling.
Underwater video of fish for diversity
Riparian zone assessment including naming invasive and native species of flora.
Litter cleanup.
Taking Photos/Video
Experience:
Volunteers can gain skills in the following.
Operation of Water Quality Meters
Macroinvertebrate identification and sampling techniques
Fish trapping and Fish identification (invasive and native)
Creating habitat assessments
Photography/video skills (including drone)
Skills in Identification of weeds and native flora
Data entry and analysis
People skills (working as a group to reach the desired outcome)
