Parks Maintenance Officer (Botanic Areas)
Mackay Regional Council is seeking two motivated Parks Maintenance Officers (Botanic Areas) to join our Parks & Open Spaces team. In this hands-on role, you will help maintain and preserve Council’s Botanic Areas, including the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens and Queens Park, ensuring these spaces remain vibrant, safe, and welcoming for the community.
Key Responsibilities
In this role you will:
* Maintain garden and turf areas using appropriate horticultural practices including pruning, mowing, weeding, chemical application, whipper snipping and basic tree maintenance
* Assist with the care and presentation of specific plant collections and bio-regional plantings
* Conduct visual inspections of gardens, turf and park areas
* Operate and maintain small plant, power tools and equipment used in park and horticultural maintenance
* Assist with the setup and maintenance of green spaces for community events
* Use technology for communication, data collection and work order management
* Complete scheduled maintenance works and contribute to specific projects
* Deliver a high level of customer service while upholding Council’s image and reputation
* Comply with Workplace Health & Safety obligations and procedures
About You
You are a practical, reliable team member who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in maintaining public spaces.
Essential Requirements
* General Construction Induction Training (White Card)
* Current QLD “C” Class Driver Licence (or ability to transfer within three months)
* Practical experience in public gardens, landscaping and/or general labouring
* Experience operating and maintaining small plant, power tools and equipment
* Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team
* Strong communication skills and a commitment to quality customer service
* Ability to maintain accurate records
* Knowledge of horticultural practices and principles as well as practical experience in the field of horticulture
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* Certificate II in Horticulture or Arboriculture
* Experience with herbicide and pesticide application
* ACDC Commercial Operators Licence
* Chainsaw (Level 1), pole saw or irrigation qualifications
* Experience with irrigation repairs and installation
* Experience maintaining or showcasing plant collections
Special Requirements
* Occasional out-of-hours work, including weekends
* Regular local travel
* Capacity to undertake physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions
* Availability to assist with emergency management response when required
