Where you'll be working:
Maitland Hospital is an acute inpatient facility located in the Lower Hunter region, supporting the tertiary referral services of John Hunter Hospital. Opened in 2021, Maitland Hospital is a contemporary greenfield facility located in Metford, NSW, providing Level 5 inpatient and associated outpatient services to the growing regional population.
The hospital is home to a busy Orthopaedic and General Surgical service. The Physiotherapy Department also offers a range of subspecialty services, including Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED) physiotherapy.
Maitland Hospital is supported by a skilled and collaborative multidisciplinary team with a strong commitment to patient-centred care and high-quality clinical outcomes. The service maintains a progressive approach to healthcare delivery and is responsive to evolving models of care and evidence-based practice, while ensuring patient care remains central to all clinical and operational decision-making.
About the role:
This role encompasses the management of a large and diverse orthopaedic and general surgical caseload, including outlier patients across the hospital. You will primarily be responsible for the physiotherapy management of two 28-bed wards providing Orthopaedic and General Surgical services. As such, extensive experience in orthopaedic and surgical physiotherapy is essential, including the management of both elective and trauma presentations, and post-operative surgical patients.

In addition to the core surgical caseload, the role includes coverage of outlier wards such as Paediatrics, Women's Health, overflow Maternity, and Day Stay services, managing a range of post-operative and acute inpatient presentations. The successful applicant will demonstrate flexibility, sound clinical reasoning, and the ability to adapt effectively across varied clinical environments while maintaining a high standard of patient-centred care.
About you:
Skills in splinting and casting are essential for this role, along with a strong understanding of, and confidence within, your scope of practice. You will demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development relevant to your allocated caseload and exhibit the attributes necessary to effectively supervise, communicate with, and support less experienced staff.
The role requires significant orthopaedic and general surgical experience, including the management of both non-operative and post-operative surgical patients across the inpatient setting.
