Primary objective
The position provides high level operational input into the policy and project focussed work the unit and branch is responsible
for, ensuring that up-to-date clear, concise technical reference standards and information are available and applied within
the Branch while also providing the primary higher level technical support to the Division's inspectorate and members of the
public.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide advice, detailed assessment and reporting on applications and issues relating to matters of vehicle safety,
consistent with relevant legislation, codes of practice and vehicle safety standards.
2. Manage the applications and the evaluation of vehicle modifications in accordance with relevant national codes and
standards affecting the safety of modified vehicles including imported vehicles, special purpose vehicles, innovative
heavy vehicles and commercial passenger vehicles.
1. Undertake detailed objective analysis of vehicle safety and modification related information based on evidence and
report and make recommendations to and support the Manager of the unit.
1. Recognise the links between interconnected vehicle safety standards and compliance issues locally, cross-border and
federally, identifying problems, inconsistencies and working proactively to resolve them.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven experience in mechanical fields relating to motor vehicle standards and safety, including knowledge of and the
ability to interpret technical standards and legislation.
1. High level written communication skills with the ability to undertake complex research tasks and compile clear concise
reports.
1. Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to use personal computer applications, databases and business records
management systems.
1. Demonstrated, highly developed, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to exercise
discretion, initiative and interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
5. Relevant mechanical trade or tertiary qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent, or experience in
the field.
Desirable
1. Understanding of the road transport industry in the Northern Territory and vehicle safety standards applicable to road
vehicles.
