We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented machinist to join our team, specializing in the construction and refurbishment of theatrical drapes, backdrops and soft goods. This role requires precision, craftsmanship, and a keen eye for fabric handling, ensuring our stage curtains meet professional standards for durability and aesthetics.Casual to start, with the opportunity to explore part-time or full-time options for the right person.
Key Responsibilities:
* Read and interpret patterns, technical plans, and specifications for drapery, upholstery and soft goods construction.
* Cut and stitch fabric to create new drapes and backdrops, ensuring accuracy in measurements and finishes.
* Hang, fold, and prepare newly built drapes for shipping or installation.
* Steam, mend, patch, and fire-proof drapes that require refurbishment.
* Maintain sewing machinery and tools, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
* Collaborate with our in‐house production team to achieve tailored solutions for theatrical productions.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
* Ability to lift, move, and manipulate heavy, large‐scale textiles throughout the workday.
* Comfortable working at industrial sewing machines, on the floor, and in tight or awkward spaces.
* Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and carry items for extended periods.
* Willingness to perform workshop and workroom upkeep, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and resetting work areas.
* Comfortable with repetitive, hands‐on tasks in a fast‐paced production environment.
* Additional practical skills — such as painting, carpentry, metalwork or ability to use power tools — can be utilised across other departments when extra support is needed.
Qualifications & Skills
* Experience in industrial sewing, fabric cutting, and pattern interpretation.
* Familiarity with materials used in stage and event drapery, including fire‐proofing techniques.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under deadlines.
* Ability to handle heavy, large‐scale textiles with care and precision.
* Experience in theatrical or event production environments is a bonus.
