The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is the united strong national voice for local government, representing 538 councils across the country. In structure, ALGA is a federation of state and territory local government associations. The Association is a company limited by guarantee.

Our Mission is to achieve outcomes for local government through advocacy with impact and to maximise the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of councils and our communities.

Key activities for ALGA include:

* advocacy for ALGA’s policy priorities in the federal political sphere (i.e. across Federal Government, the Opposition and the federal parliament)

* representation of local government on national bodies, senior official committees and ministerial councils

* chairing and managing policy networks from across local government associations

* providing submissions to government and parliamentary inquiries

* enhancing the national reputation of local government and its role in the Australian system of government

* raising the concerns and aspirations of local government at the national level

* providing forums for local government to guide the development of national policies that have an impact at the local government level.

Primary purpose of the position

ALGA delivers two signature events each year: the National General Assembly (3 day event in Canberra with over 1300 conference delegates) and the National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress (annual 2 day even in regional locations).

Throughout the year, the events manager also supports other public-facing ALGA events and products as required, such as online webinars or roundtables with Ministers.

The key focus of the role is to lead and coordinate our major events, ensuring seamless delivery of operational, logistical, and program elements. This includes contract management of our event provider and stakeholders management of our sponsors and suppliers.

You will also be responsible for drafting key communication documents related to the events including correspondence, promotional collateral, speeches, talking points, website and social media channels content.

Above all, as a representative of ALGA, you will build trusted relationships with partners and stakeholders, including Federal Government and relevant peak bodies.

This position works within a close-knit and dynamic team with a high amount of delegated responsibility. Regular communication within this team and with other key ALGA personnel is essential.

Key responsibilities

The Events Officer will work closely with the Head of Strategic Communications and Governance for the end-to-end delivery of the ALGA events program. This includes:

* developing and maintaining a detailed implementation work plan, delivery schedule and risk register

* coordinating national promotion and engagement activities to increase awareness and uptake of ALGA events

* contract management of our significant contract with an external events team

* working closely with internal ALGA teams (including media and communications) to ensure consistent messaging and effective dissemination

* establishing and implementing an evaluation approach that measures reach (awareness and engagement) and perceived value/impact of our events

* working closely with the Manager of Finance to ensure accountability, including procurement/contract coordination if required, and ensuring milestones and deliverables are met on time and within budget

* identify, secure and grow sponsorship, partnership and exhibitor opportunities, including developing tailored proposals and negotiating mutually beneficial agreements.

Please note that some out-of-hours work will be required at time of the two significant events.

Skills, knowledge and experience

You’ll need strong project management, stakeholder engagement and communication skills, and you’ll coordinate planning, delivery, reporting and evaluation across the events. This includes:

* Extensive experience in managing events

* Demonstrated experience engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and building constructive working relationships (including with government, sponsors and/or member organisations)

* Demonstrated experience in preparing written material

* A collaborative and open communication style with strong interpersonal and influencing capabilities

* Excellent time management skills, including managing projects and competing demands; and

* Demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications are not required for this role.

Qualifications or demonstrated experience in large-scale event management, program/project management or community engagement, will be well regarded.
