An established energy infrastructure owner–operator is seeking a Specialist Electrical Engineer to act as the technical authority for primary electrical systems across a portfolio of large, complex projects.
This is a senior individual contributor role with genuine design authority. You'll provide specialist advice and oversight across the full lifecycle of primary electrical systems, from early feasibility through construction, commissioning, and long-term operations.
Role overview
You will own primary electrical system decisions and standards, supporting multiple projects and operational assets. The role works closely with internal engineering, grid, construction, and operations teams, as well as external contractors, network service providers, and market bodies.
Key responsibilities
• Act as design authority for primary electrical systems across multiple projects
• Review and approve primary electrical designs, drawings, calculations, and reports
• Develop and maintain technical specifications for balance-of-plant contractors
• Support feasibility reviews to ensure projects are technically robust and bankable
• Interface with grid connection teams, network service providers, and regulators
• Attend FAT/SATs and support commissioning and hold-point testing as required
• Provide technical support to construction and operations teams, including RCAs and design improvements
• Lead failure mode analysis, optimisation studies, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Maintain and improve engineering templates, standards, and design tools
Technical background
• Strong experience in HV primary systems including transformers, circuit breakers, cables, CTs/VTs, surge arresters, disconnectors and earthing systems
• Primary substation design experience across AIS and/or GIS environments
• Electrical studies exposure such as load flow, short-circuit, insulation coordination, arc flash and EMF
• Understanding of protection interfaces and how primary systems interact with secondary, SCADA and communications
• Familiarity with Australian and international standards (AS, IEC, IEEE, ANSI) and grid compliance requirements
• Practical understanding of constructability, installation methods, and site interfaces
Why this role
• Genuine technical authority position, not a project management role
• Exposure to complex, high-value energy infrastructure projects
• Long-term portfolio ownership rather than single-project delivery
• Collaborative engineering environment with strong technical depth
This role suits a senior primary engineer who wants to stay hands-on technically, influence standards and outcomes, and play a key role in the delivery and operation of critical energy infrastructure.
