EdConnect mentors provide support to students who are at risk of not achieving their education and life potential. Mentors use their listening skills and life experience to build a positive, trusting relationship and provide one-on-one social and emotional support outside the classroom, on school grounds.
* Provide one hour, weekly mentoring sessions during school terms.
* Build a trusting relationship.
* Teach social skills and provide emotional support.
* Assist a student to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
* Whilst academic work can be an element of the mentoring time, it does not need to be the main focus.
* Decide on activities together, such as talking, building projects, games, crafts, sports or other projects.
* On occasion, mentoring can be done in small groups.
We ask mentors to commit for a minimum of 6 months to one year, so students can benefit from the experience.
EdConnect has an almost 30-year track record of success. In 2024 in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, over 1,000 EdConnect volunteers worked with over students 20,000, in 242 schools.
BENEFITS
* STUDENTS EdConnect provides a framework to create positive outcomes for students, particularly those at risk of disengaging from education.
* VOLUNTEERS EdConnect volunteers are inspired by their work in schools. They find purpose and reward from their commitment to helping students.
* TEACHERS EdConnect provide teachers under pressure with much-needed support in the classroom.
* FAMILIES & FRIENDS When a student is at risk of disengagement, their whole network can be affected. The reach of our program extends to families, parents, peers and siblings.
* FLEXIBLE DELIVERY EdConnect program delivery is flexible. We focus on outcomes, matching volunteers to students in schools to maximise learning and development opportunities.
EdConnect volunteers do not require any particular qualifications, besides life experience, fluency in English and a keen interest in helping a new generation build the skills they need for success in life.
