About Whitsunday Regional Council

We support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a diverse range of operations, we offer an inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

About the opportunity

You will be paid while you train at the Whitsunday Regional Council's training program and become a Heavy Diesel Maintenance Associate. These are permanent opportunities, and once successfully completing your studies, you will continue your employment with us based at one of our maintenance facilities.

Our Offer is a 12-month training program where you will train to become highly skilled and valued Maintenance Associates, completing a Certificate II in Engineering – Production Technology and becoming familiar with maintaining specific equipment.

The main responsibility of the Heavy Diesel Maintenance Associate is the maintenance and servicing of heavy diesel mobile machinery. This includes inspection and servicing, removing and replacing major components on the largest pieces of equipment. The training involves a mixture of both classroom and practical learning on how to maintain equipment such as Bulldozers, Graders, Loaders, Excavators, Dump Trucks and much more.

While training you will be working a roster that rotates across early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Candidates would need to relocate to the area if they do not already live locally. As these are town-based Traineeships, accommodation or transport will not be provided. However, upon successful completion of the training program, you will commence employment based at our maintenance facility.

When working at our facility, we provide you with ensuited accommodation and meals.

Whitsunday Regional Council has operations across the region and it is important to understand that you may be required to relocate (including interstate) once you complete your training. This is based on demand for your trade or skillset across our facilities.

About you

We're looking for people from a broad range of backgrounds. Previous maintenance training is not necessary however you will have a genuine interest in fixing, repairing or tinkering and understanding this is physically demanding role where you will be working with machinery parts that involve grease and dirt. Ideally you will have proven examples of getting hands-on (through a hobby, or previous work experience) and a desire to learn more.

As these training programs contain fast-tracked learning, you will need to commit to attendance and have a personal situation and/or support network that will allow you to live local to our training center and work your training roster and an understanding of how this will work once you are deployed to site.

To set you up for success, you will need:

1. A high commitment to safety is a must
2. A strong desire to learn and develop a range of new skills
3. Motivation to achieve goals & enjoy a mixture of classroom and hands-on learning
4. Ability to live a safe travelling distance to the training centre - this is not a FIFO/DIDO role (whilst studying at the academy)
5. Ability to attend a roster that rotates across early mornings, evenings and weekends.
6. To have the necessary personal support networks available to assist you in working the above roster
7. Experience working on machinery/vehicles through a hobby or work is highly regarded, but not essential

Benefits of the program

If successful, you will be paid to study whilst working on industry leading equipment, and will have the opportunity to learn about our systems and processes.

Transition to Trade - After 12 months being deployed, if the Maintenance Associate is selected and has interest in completing a trade, they will go back to our training center and study for another 12 - 18 months. This will function more like a traditional trade, with time split between the training center and completing practical skills on site.

As a permanent employee with Whitsunday Regional Council you will receive an attractive salary and a wide range of benefits such as:

1. Career development & training opportunities
2. Community and wellness programs including a 24/7 confidential counselling and support service
3. Discounted Leisure & Entertainment Memberships and regional recognition program
4. World-class regional employee share plan
