The Position
We are seeking a highly experienced stakeholder engagement professional to lead a team working to enable individuals, groups, and reef-dependent industries (primarily the marine tourism industry) with various motivations and levels of capacity, to achieve positive environmental outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
This executive-level role focuses on establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial partnerships and strategic relationships that foster stewardship and collaboration. The Reef Authority aims to empower people to take action by building others' capacity to be active stewards of the Great Barrier Reef.
This position and its team will influence and empower others to support actions that build resilience, positioning community and industry to protect and conserve the Reef as a leading example of reef stewardship and environmental best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Provide executive leadership to reef engagement and environmental stewardship programs, including High Standard Tourism Operators, Master Reef Guides, Eye on the Reef, and cross-agency initiatives aligned with the Reef Authority’s vision.
Offer expert advice on stakeholder engagement and Reef stewardship partnership strategies to support the strategic direction of the Reef Authority.
Develop, implement, and evaluate stakeholder engagement plans, programs, projects, and initiatives that support the Authority’s objectives.
Lead the implementation of integrated stakeholder engagement programs that empower community and industry participation, fostering partnerships for action and innovation.
Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, representing the Reef Authority in various forums, and managing stakeholder engagement through change, conflict resolution, and sensitivities.
Support the Director and collaborate on the Reef Education and Engagement Plan and related initiatives.

Proven success in leading high-impact environmental stewardship programs, with experience in eliciting positive environmental behaviors.
Experience in building and maintaining strategic stakeholder relationships.
Skills in setting and achieving strategic objectives and resource management.
Leadership qualities that motivate and inspire teams, contributing to a positive workplace culture.
Strategic thinking, problem-solving, and high-standard delivery capabilities.
Ability to work under pressure, with attention to detail and managing competing priorities.
Effective communication skills and recognition of team contributions.

Extensive professional experience in stakeholder management in complex environments.
Availability for occasional after-hours work and travel.
Experience in industry/community engagement and stewardship program leadership.
Tertiary qualifications in marine science or natural resource management.
Understanding of Marine Park management.
Minimum dive qualification of Dive Master or equivalent, with ongoing training as per standards.
