This role offers a meaningful opportunity for someone with lived or living experience of mental health challenges who is passionate about supporting the LGBTIQA+ community. Working in a welcoming, inclusive service, you will walk alongside individuals experiencing distress or crisis, offering peer‐led support that promotes hope, connection and recovery.

Employment Type: Permanent full‐time and part‐time opportunities (4 days per week available) | 7‐day roster

Applicants must be able to work varied shifts across the roster

About the Role

As an LGBTIQA+ Peer Practitioner, you will draw on your lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery to support people accessing the Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing relational, recovery‐oriented peer support and helping individuals reconnect with their community and services that support their wellbeing.

A key focus of this role is supporting LGBTIQA+ community members, including facilitating peer connection groups and helping create safe, affirming spaces for individuals navigating mental health challenges.

Key Responsibilities
* Provide peer support informed by lived experience and recovery‐oriented practice
* Share personal recovery insights in ways that build hope and connection
* Deliver flexible, person‐centred support to individuals experiencing mental health distress
* Facilitate peer groups and community connections for LGBTIQA+ service users
* Support people to navigate services and access community resources
* Collaborate with clinical teams and community partners
* Maintain accurate documentation and service records
What You'll Bring Qualifications
* Minimum Certificate IV in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), or another relevant health‐related field
* Completion of Intentional Peer Support Training is desirable
Experience / Requirements
* Lived or living experience of mental health and/or AOD challenges
* Ability to share lived experience appropriately to support others in recovery
* Previous experience working in a Peer Worker or Peer Practitioner role strongly desirable
* Experience supporting or working with LGBTIQA+ communities
* Strong communication and relationship‐building skills
* Commitment to recovery‐oriented and trauma‐informed practice
