This entry-level program provides comprehensive training and support, giving you the skills and knowledge to build a successful career in rail maintenance. You’ll work as part of a team in an outdoor environment, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our rail network.
With structured development and ongoing support, this program sets you up for progression opportunities in roles such as, Heavy Rail Plant Operator, Track Inspector, & Ganger. Paving the way for a secure and rewarding career.

About The Role
As the Way Maintainer, you are integral to the success of V/Line’s Assets & Maintenance Group. You will work under the direction of the Track Supervisor and be responsible for general maintenance of track infrastructure and rail reserve assets to provide a safe and efficient rail network.
Key Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Carrying out tasks for the renewal or maintenance work across the rail networkParticipating in the replacement or renewal of rail infrastructure materials i.e. sleepers, rail, ballast, fasteningsSafe operation of medium plant as requiredCleaning up plant equipment and worksite and participate in general site maintenance.Using & maintaining hand tools and minor mechanical equipment.Ensure all work is performed in accordance with appropriate OH&S standards and regulations.
About You
You take pride in your work, ensuring rail operations run safely and efficiently. A team player with strong problem-solving skills, you can work independently while following strict safety protocols.
To be considered for entry into the selection process for this role, applicants must meet the following 'key selection criteria' which forms part of our merit-based recruitment process:
A Current Valid Driver’s LicenceSuccessful completion of Year 10Availability and commitment to work across a rotating schedule
Desirable Attributes:
Certificate II in Rail InfrastructureExperience working across multiple shift types (day, afternoon, night)Familiarity with minor mechanical equipment used in rail maintenanceExposure to safety and risk management practices in infrastructure environmentsPrevious experience in a manual labouring rolePrevious experience in a construction / civil background Demonstrated alignment with V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.
