Livestock overseer

Drover Ag
Posted: 20 December
Offer description

This is a senior and rewarding opportunity for an experienced professional to join a mixed farming operation as a Livestock Overseer. Allen's Warrawee Park is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic individual to manage their substantial self-replacing Poll Merino flock.

The Employer:

Warrawee Park is a family-owned, mixed farming operation based in Keith, SA, spanning 2,700ha.

The livestock enterprise focuses on a self-replacing Poll Merino flock of 3,600 ewes, with a significant portion of lambs being finished on farm. The sheep operation is carefully integrated with the pasture and cropping program to optimise feed availability and resource utilisation across the property.

Cropping at Warrawee Park is diversified across both dryland and flood-irrigated areas. Approximately 700-800 hectares are dedicated to dryland cropping, primarily growing high-quality canola, wheat, barley, beans, and cereal hay. An additional 800 hectares are under flood irrigation, significantly enhancing productivity and allowing for the consistent production of high-value crops, such as lucerne seed and hay, as well as irrigated canola, wheat, barley, and cereal hay. The remaining area is predominantly sown to improved pasture species, with strategic clay spreading employed where required to maximise soil health and water-holding capacity.

The Role

Reporting to the Farm Owner, the Livestock Overseer is primarily responsible for managing, participating in, and overseeing all livestock and livestock processes, ensuring strong Animal Welfare standards are upheld.

The successful candidate will be hands-on with the day-to-day care of the stock, including the organising of lamb marking, shearing, drenching, and preparing sale sheep. The role involves monitoring and reporting on the condition of the flock, pasture assessment and grazing management, and preparing stock for transport.

The role also involves providing general farm support across both broadacre and irrigation enterprises, encompassing fencing repairs, maintenance of farm equipment and infrastructure. At times, you may be required to assist with cropping operations and harvest. A key responsibility is the accurate monitoring and maintenance of flood irrigation systems, including operating pumps and changing gates as needed. Please note that out-of-hours work will be necessary for both livestock and irrigation duties at times.

At Warrawee, your expertise will be highly valued. You will have significant input in designing future livestock infrastructure developments, providing industry-specific guidance and knowledge. We encourage and welcome your preferences and recommendations for brand-specific equipment and designs.

The Offer

The successful applicant will receive a competitive package, relative to their experience, which includes above-award wages paid on an hourly basis. You will be provided accommodation in a large 3-bedroom, brick, solar-powered home, which is well-suited to a family, with school bus access at the farm gate. This generous package includes a lamb ration and a work vehicle, suitable for local use only.

The area boasts a fantastic and active local community, offering abundant opportunities to participate in sports and join local clubs. Furthermore, the nearby town of Keith, a mere 10 km away, offers excellent employment opportunities for other family members.

The Ideal Candidate

Warrawee seeks a committed individual who is a self-starter, organised and demonstrates enthusiasm, honesty, and trustworthiness. The successful candidate will ideally possess significant practical experience across the following key areas:

* Livestock experience in sheep animal health skills: strict adherence to Animal Welfare practices
* Experience in practical use and maintenance of large modern cropping machinery
* Skilled with AgriWebb
* Working dogs are a requirement
* Flexibility in your daily work structure and routine
* The ability to work within a team or autonomously when required
* Previous irrigation experience is considered advantageous
