Position Overview
The Engineering Technologist supports the application of engineering principles and established technologies to the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimisation of heavy port and terminal material-handling equipment. The role focuses on translating engineering designs, manufacturer specifications, and technical standards into practical operational and maintenance solutions to ensure equipment safety, reliability, and performance in port and logistics environments.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Application of Engineering Technology
* Apply established engineering methods, standards, and manufacturer specifications to support the operation and maintenance of port and terminal equipment.
* Assist in the implementation of engineering solutions for material-handling machinery, ensuring alignment with engineering designs and operational requirements.
* Interpret engineering drawings, hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, and OEM technical documentation.
Equipment Troubleshooting and Technical Analysis
* Conduct systematic fault diagnosis and troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on heavy port equipment, including:
o Reach Stackers
o Empty Container Handlers
o Heavy forklifts and terminal handling equipment
* Use diagnostic tools, OEM software, and testing equipment to identify root causes of equipment failures.
* Analyse operational data and fault histories to identify recurring technical issues and recommend engineering improvements.
Maintenance Planning and Technical Support
* Support preventive and corrective maintenance programs by applying engineering standards and best practices.
* Assist in planning maintenance activities to optimise equipment availability and minimise downtime.
* Provide technical guidance to maintenance technicians to ensure repairs are carried out in accordance with engineering specifications.
Engineering Documentation and Reporting
* Prepare and maintain engineering and maintenance documentation, including:
o Technical reports
o Fault analysis reports
o Maintenance procedures and work instructions
* Ensure accurate recording of technical data to support compliance, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Safety, Compliance, and Quality Assurance
* Apply workplace health and safety requirements, engineering standards, and port safety regulations to all engineering and maintenance activities.
* Participate in risk assessments, safety reviews, and engineering inspections related to heavy equipment operation.
* Ensure equipment modifications and repairs comply with OEM requirements and relevant Australian standards.
Stakeholder Coordination and Technical Liaison
* Liaise with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and external service providers for technical support and engineering advice.
* Assist engineers and management by providing technical input on equipment performance, reliability, and improvement opportunities.
* Support training and knowledge transfer for technicians on equipment systems and updated technologies.
Qualifications and Experience
* Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Substantial experience in port, terminal, logistics, or heavy material-handling environments.
* Hands-on experience supporting the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of reach stackers, empty container handlers, and similar port equipment.
