The Role
The EL 1 Commercial Deputy Director is accountable for managing and delivering complex to very complex contract management and procurement activities, providing authoritative advice on commercial, policy, procurement, and contract management matters. The role leads the development and implementation of procurement documentation and contract management strategies, exercising sound professional judgement within legislative, policy, and governance frameworks. The position acts as a senior point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, managing relationships, resolving issues, and influencing outcomes to support Defence capability and business objectives. The role plans, prioritises, and manages people and other resources to deliver agreed outcomes, balancing competing priorities, risks, and stakeholder expectations. It takes initiative to drive performance, monitor outcomes, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
The EL 1 has people management responsibility, translating strategic objectives into operational plans while leading, coaching, and developing a high performing, collaborative, and inclusive team.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team
The Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) will be one of the most advanced warships in the world with cutting edge technology and capabilities. As Australia’s largest shipbuilding project, HCF provides the foundation for Continuous Naval Shipbuilding in Australia. We are working with experts from the UK, USA, Canada and Europe to provide six frigates optimised for anti-submarine warfare to the Royal Australian Navy. The frigates are being constructed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard, South Australia utilising the latest production technologies. Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in contract management and procurement, with the ability to apply diverse commercial skill sets to support delivery of the Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) acquisition program. They will be able to develop and implement effective work plans, set performance indicators, and review individual and team performance, with a focus on building capability and driving continuous improvement. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound leadership, motivating and leading a small but high performing team. They will exercise a high degree of independence, applying sound judgement to provide expert commercial and contracting advice and pragmatic solutions in a complex environment. Strong stakeholder management skills are essential, including the ability to influence outcomes across internal and external stakeholders. The role also requires strong analytical capability, effective management of business and reporting requirements, and a commitment to ongoing self improvement and professional development of staff.
