About the opportunity

The Sydney Environment Institute is a national and world leader in multidisciplinary environmental and climate research, known in particular for work in the environmental humanities and social sciences.

Working with leading interdisciplinary scholars, Prof Amanda Tattersall and Prof David Schlosberg, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Justice and Electricity Transmissionwill be an integral member of a multidisciplinary team working on the research project 'Just transmission: advancing coherence in Australia's electricity policy' (funded by the Australian Research Council, DP250103027).

The project aims to develop strategies for a just and coherent approach to constructing new electricity transmission infrastructure in Australia. Through fieldwork and comparative legal and political analysis of synergies and tensions between policy objectives, the project expects to generate new knowledge on best practice for how transmission projects can engage and benefit regional communities. The project thereby seeks to generate robust knowledge to inform scholarly and policy discussions about the future of Australia's energy transition.

In addition to their specific contributions to the Project, the fellowship is designed to offer the Fellow opportunities to build a mix of skills that will equip them to pursue an academic and/or public sector career.

About the opportunity

Your key responsibilities will be to:

* conduct original research as part of a team, focusing on theory development, community engagement, and co-design

* assist with the development of a framework and principles for theorising just transmission and energy justice

* refine this framework informed by community engagement

* implement co-design strategies for testing and shaping principles of energy justice in community workshops

* assist in the development of materials for public engagement, conference presentations, and academic publications, including convening community-led workshop

* co-design strategies for advancing energy justice; and

* develop policy reports and community guides along with academic outputs.

About you

* an interest in community engaged research and community benefits processes associated with climate transition and regional communities

* an interest in environmental, climate, and energy justice definitions and applications

* completed a PhD in any area related to environmental social science, geography, broadly defined, including humanities and social sciences, community-engaged research methods, geography or public policy

* demonstrated knowledge and an emerging profile in environmental sciences and/or community engaged research and climate transition

* evidence of the ability to conduct independent research and assume responsibility for the development and completion of research projects and publications; and

* have an Australian Drivers License.
