Primary objective
As a member of the administration team and under the direction of the Principal, the Maintenance Officer is required to play a key role in
ensuring the high standard of grounds maintenance, security, safety and presentation associated with the day-to-day physical condition
of the school and assets.
Context statement
Ramingining School is a very remote indigenous school situated in East Arnhem Land. The school has an active FaFT program, Pre-school,
Primary, Middle Years and Senior Secondary with an enrolment of 250 students. The students speak in their first language and English is
a second or third language. The Yolngu families are very active in their culture, and Yolngu and non-Indigenous teachers work as teams to
plan and teach the whole school curriculum.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Ensure the maintenance, safety and security associated with the physical condition of the school and its grounds are upheld to a high
standard.
2. Identify and resolve potential Work Health and Safety risks by immediately reporting and acting to resolve the problem.
1. Monitor and report any urgent and minor repairs or defects, including overseeing repairs undertaken by external contractors to ensure
satisfactory completion.
4. Carry out grounds maintenance tasks such as trimming, mowing, blowing, water-blasting, whipper-snipping, weeding, poisoning,
pruning, watering and planting new vegetation as required to ensure a high standard of presentation is upheld.
5. Provide other operational support such as relocation of furniture, storage of furniture, equipment and assets; and purchasing/courier
services as required.
6. Assist with setting up and pack up at student events on site and carnival days
7. As required, assist with transporting students under supervision to external excursions and performances.
1. Maintain personal work areas in a neat, orderly and safe manner, including appropriate use, storage and maintenance of tools,
chemicals/fuels, paint and powered equipment.
9. Prioritise and perform work tasks reliably, under limited supervision, whilst adhering to school and departmental policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability and initiative to undertake general repairs and maintenance with the ability to produce a high standard of finish
under limited supervision.
2. Experience with grounds maintenance equipment including proficient use of operating ride-on mowers, push mowers, trimmers,
pressure washers and leaf blowers.
1. Demonstrated knowledge on irrigation systems with the ability to program and troubleshoot errors, repair minor irrigation issues and
an understanding of water saving initiatives.
1. Demonstrated ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines and work independently; have well-developed communication (both
verbal and written) and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors and school staff.
1. Demonstrated understanding of safe work practices and experience working within Work, Health and Safety policies and procedures.
2. Proficiency in utilising email and calendar management software such as Microsoft Outlook and Compass.
3. Trade qualifications relevant to the position or equivalent relevant grounds and maintenance substantial experience.
Desirable
1. A current Northern Territory C Class and Light Rigid drivers' licence with the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
