Lead Organic Chemist
* This role oversees the organic chemistry department to meet key performance indicators and provides expert analytical support, chemical advice, method development, and result reporting to ensure that analytical services and results generated are of the highest quality and meet customer expectations.
* The Chemistry Centre offers accredited analysis of water, soil, sediment, biota, and plant samples to support government projects and decision-making for agricultural, environmental, and resource management outcomes.
Your Key Responsibilities:
* Supervise and coordinate a team of technical and professional staff operating and maintaining major instruments such as triple quadrupole liquid chromatography mass spectrometers (LCMSMS), UPLC, GCMS, IC, and ICPMS associated with the analysis and reporting of water, soil, and plant samples.
* Provide specialist analytical chemistry input to support the development and implementation of environmental monitoring projects and programs associated with land resources assessment, land use management strategies, and environmental fate of contamination in water, soil, and plants.
* Develop, validate, and monitor pesticide and emerging contaminants analytical methods to improve accuracy, efficiency, and meet project needs.
* Maintain documentation and analytical reports according to quality policies and procedures.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with internal and external customers and provide technical and scientific advice related to research findings, analysis, and reports as required.
* Ensure compliance with legislation including the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and the Financial Accountability Act 2009.
The Ideal Candidate Will Be Someone Who:
* Has extensive experience in organic analytical chemistry, method development, and techniques related to pesticide analyses, PFAS, and emerging contaminants.
* Has demonstrated experience in leading teams successfully, managing high-throughput sample analysis, and supporting the delivery of environmental projects, including providing guidance to resolve complex analytical challenges.
* Has effective interpersonal communication skills and can communicate results and research findings confidently and clearly.
* Has good computer skills, including experience with databases, laboratory information management systems, statistical software, and word-processing software.
