In supporting the Bureau to deliver impactful weather, climate, ocean and water information services, the research contributes to advancing meteorological and earth system sciences in Australia and globally. Research activities cover the broad fields of weather, climate, oceanography, earth systems modelling, data set development, process studies, and application development.

These roles sit within the Seamless Prediction Science Section of the Bureau's Research Program but is primarily focused on delivering Bureau contributions to the Australian Climate Service (ACS) and the National Climate Risk Assessment. ACS helps emergency management and federal and state government customers to better understand the threats posed by a changing climate and natural hazards, to limit the impacts now and in the future. This role involves developing extensive climate and natural hazard information in a single national view, such as leading the curation of scientific inputs for the National Climate Risk Assessment, and other ACS initiatives.

You will conduct research, both independently and under guidance, and analyse observational data and extremely large data sets based on output from earth system models and reanalyses using a variety of sophisticated statistical and physical techniques. You will integrate hazard and climate risk information for National Climate Risk Assessment hazards, across all timescales from days to decades. This role will focus on one or more of the following: drought and aridity, tropical and extratropical cyclones, thunderstorms and other phenomena leading to wind, hail and or flooding hazards including coastal flooding;

The successful candidates will need to have:
