Overview
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) is looking for a Senior Mental Health Clinician to support community health and well-being across Far North Queensland. The Far North Mental Health and Wellbeing Service offers free counselling and support to people living and working in rural and remote areas. In this role, you will be dedicated to client-centred care and improving the well-being of people in the communities we serve. You will deliver psychological therapies to people presenting with mild to moderate mental health needs, working in remote locations with people from various cultures and tailoring care to their needs.

Key points
- Maintain a healthy work-life balance while working full time (8 day fortnight)
- Based in Cairns; fly-in, fly-out to Cape York communities
- Work Monday to Thursday; no weekends or shift work
Responsibilities
- Provide client-centred psychological therapies to individuals with mild to moderate mental health needs
- Deliver intake, triage, assessment and ongoing treatment for referred clients
- Provide a range of evidence-based clinical interventions
- Undertake comprehensive holistic clinical assessments
- Deliver ongoing psychological therapies and counselling
- Conduct case reviews and collaborate with inter-agency networks
Qualifications
- Qualification in Psychology, Social Work (AASW-accredited), Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing (suitable for mental health credentialing)
- Registration with AHPRA or membership of the AASW
- Post-graduate experience as a senior clinician with five years in a relevant clinical field
- Experience in brief interventions and therapeutic counselling with clients across the lifespan
- Experience with cultural diversity and understanding of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views of health and wellness
Role details
- Full-time role based in Cairns with FIFO travel to the Cape York Peninsula
- Typical schedule: Monday to Thursday; admin day every second week at the RFDS Cairns Base
- Overnight stays in communities (up to 3 nights per week); accommodation, a vehicle and daily allowances provided
- Initial contract until 30 June 2026
What a typical day looks like
- Travel to communities from the Northern Peninsula Area to Wujal Wujal
- Collaborate with communities to deliver culturally appropriate, holistic services
- Manage intake, triage, assessment and ongoing treatment for referred clients
- Provide a range of evidence-based clinical interventions
- Conduct complex holistic clinical assessments and ongoing psychological therapies
- Conduct case reviews and work with other service providers

Legal and eligibility
Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted Australian driver’s licence. You may need to provide certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases. RFDS credentialing is required. Non-AHPRA registered professionals will need to obtain a blue card and undergo a criminal history check. A valid driver’s licence is mandatory.
