Cto – ai-native engineering

Sydney
Seventh Street Ventures
Posted: 26 March
Offer description

Most companies hire a CTO to manage engineers.

We're hiring a CTO to replace them.

Here's the situation.

We run a venture studio. Not one business. A portfolio of them. And they're not boring.

* A B2C hospitality platform working with the country's biggest chefs
* A B2B SaaS product used by 40% of the childcare industry in Australia
* An artist management company
* Record labels
* A pickleball and childcare concept
* ...and more coming

Right now, every time we need something built, we're dependent on agencies, freelancers, or slow internal processes. It's expensive. It's slow. And we don't control our own technical destiny.

We don't want to hire a 20-person dev team.

We want to hire one exceptional person who uses AI coding agents to do the work of 20. You'll have budget for 1–2 engineers under you if needed – but the expectation is that you and your AI tools are the primary engine.

That's you.

What this actually means

You'll be the engineering function for a portfolio of companies. Not sitting in meetings about engineering. Doing the engineering. Amplified by AI.

You use tools like Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Windsurf – not as experiments, but as your daily workflow. You've already figured out that one senior engineer with the right AI tools can outproduce a team of ten.

But speed without quality is just expensive failure. So you also make sure every line of code that goes live is:

* Secure – you run SAST/DAST scanning, audit dependencies, follow OWASP Top 10, and think like an attacker before you ship
* Scalable – you design systems that handle growth without breaking or needing to be rebuilt from scratch
* Tested – you build CI/CD pipelines with automated tests at every stage so bugs die before they reach production
* Observable – you set up monitoring, alerting, and logging so nothing breaks silently at 2am
Day to day, you'll
* Architect and ship production software across multiple businesses using AI coding agents
* Own the full stack – frontend, backend, infrastructure, DevOps, databases
* Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with automated testing (unit, integration, e2e)
* Run security audits, penetration tests, and vulnerability assessments across all products
* Make all technology decisions: frameworks, hosting, data architecture, integrations
* Design systems using modern infrastructure – Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, serverless, edge functions, Infrastructure as Code
* Set up full observability – logging, monitoring, alerting, error tracking
* Hire, mentor, and manage 1–2 engineers as the portfolio demands it
* Context‐switch between B2B SaaS, consumer apps, and internal tools without missing a beat
You should have
* 5+ years in software engineering
* Daily production use of AI coding agents – not just dabbling, real output
* Deep expertise in Python and TypeScript – the core languages of AI‐native development
* Production experience with modern infrastructure – Cloudflare, Vercel, AWS, or GCP – including serverless, edge computing, and Infrastructure as Code
* Strong security knowledge – OWASP Top 10, secure coding, vulnerability remediation
* Experience designing automated testing strategies across the full testing pyramid
* Database architecture chops across SQL and NoSQL
* A track record of shipping and maintaining production systems at scale
The deal

This is a senior leadership role. We're paying accordingly.

You'll have direct founder access. Your technical decisions shape business strategy across the portfolio. You won't be buried in meetings or politics – you'll be building.

You'll have budget to bring on 1–2 engineers when the workload calls for it. But the core of this role is you, your expertise, and your AI toolkit doing what used to take an entire department.

Moore Park, Sydney office available. Remote works for the right person.

We're not posting a salary band because this role is too important to anchor low. If you're the right person, we'll make it work.

This is not for you if
* You'd rather manage engineers than be the engineer
* You think AI coding tools are a gimmick
* You ship fast but leave a trail of tech debt and security holes behind you
* You need a big team around you to feel productive
* You want to go deep on one product – we need someone who can context‐switch across many
* You optimise for interesting technology over business outcomes
How to apply

Don't send us a generic CV with a cover letter about how passionate you are.

Send us proof.

* Systems you've architected and shipped
* How you've used AI coding agents to accelerate real development (not a side project – production)
* A security or scalability challenge you solved and what the outcome was

We want to see what you've built. Not where you've worked.

If you're the kind of engineer who reads this and thinks "finally, someone who gets it" – we should talk.
