We are seeking a senior‐level Network Engineer with leadership presence.
This role is for a high‐performing engineer who not only builds complex systems, but can explain, influence, and challenge technical decisions at senior leadership level. You will operate as a trusted technical authority, working within a small, elite team delivering mission‐critical outcomes.
Leadership and influence
In this role, you will:
* Act as a technical leader and trusted advisor to Defence stakeholders
* Translate complex network architectures, risks, and trade‐offs into clear advice for senior leadership
* Apply independent engineering judgement and confidently challenge assumptions and designs
* Influence integration decisions across multiple projects and system interfaces
* Contribute to thought leadership in network architecture, integration patterns, and emerging technologies
* Mentor others and uplift engineering standards through example
What you'll do (hands‐on)
You will remain deeply technical, including:
* Design, build, and operate secure LAN and WAN architectures across deployable and fixed environments
* Implement and maintain routing, switching, and network security technologies
* Deliver network configuration control and change management
* Design and operate virtualised infrastructure (VMware, Hyper‐V, KVM)
* Engineer and implement network security architectures and countermeasures
* Design and integrate cross‐domain solutions
* Apply scripting, automation, and CI/CD practices to support innovation
* Support test, evaluation, field activities, and exercises
* Produce clear, decision‐focused technical documentation for leadership and stakeholders
What sets you apart
We are looking for engineers recognised not just for what they know, but for how they lead and communicate.
* 10+ years' experience in network engineering and systems integration
* Strong background in LAN and WAN design and integration
* Deep experience with Cisco networking technologies
* Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts simply and clearly
* Confidence to challenge designs constructively and defend technical positions
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
Highly regarded:
* Experience in Defence or government‐grade secure environments
* Deployable, tactical, or operational network experience
* Virtualisation, automation, or scripting capability
Location and engagement
* Based at Symonston, ACT
* Some domestic and occasional international travel may be required
* Long‐term contract engagement with extension options (up to five years total)
