NextSense is a not-for-profit organisation supporting people with vision or hearing loss across Australia. We work with children, adults, and their families, providing a holistic approach to hearing services for newborns through to people over 90 years old, and helping children who are blind or have low vision to develop the right skills, mobility, and independence to confidently explore their world.

NextSense has been breaking boundaries since 1860, and we've been expanding our services ever since. Today, we deliver world-class education (both to children with sensory loss and to professionals in the field), cochlear implants, allied health services, therapy, research, and clinical services to children and adults. We're a registered NDIS provider, working with our clients to achieve their own goals and potential.

We're committed to research and innovation; harnessing the latest technologies and new ways of thinking and educating the next generation to lead the way in hearing and vision services.

We are currently settling into our new world-leading centre for innovation on-site at Macquarie University that represents a new era for hearing and vision loss. This nationally significant social infrastructure project was undertaken to nurture, trial and share new ideas and form new partnerships that will drive better outcomes for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or have low vision.

**The Role**

NextSense has an exciting opportunity for a **Teacher of the Deaf **to join our team at our new Macquarie site. This is a permanent full-time role, reporting to the Head of Schools. You'll make a difference in this role by:

- Collaborate, design and implement learning and teaching programs using knowledge of curriculum, assessment/ reporting requirements and implications of sensory loss;
- Design and implement teaching activities that support the participation and learning of students with sensory loss and those with additional disability and adjust the teaching environment;
- Use current assessment data to set individual learning plans with explicit, challenging and achievable language, communication and learning goals for students;
- Establish and implement inclusive and positive interactions to engage and support students with sensory loss in meaningful learning experiences;
- Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environment and ensure students' wellbeing and safety within school by implementing school and/ or system, curriculum and legislative requirements; and
- Design and implement teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.

**Desired Skills and Experience**:
To be successful in this role you'll need to demonstrate you meet the following selection criteria.
- Relevant degree or recognised teaching qualification in Education of the Deaf. A Master of Disabilities/Sensory is favoured.
- National Association of Australian Teacher of the Deaf membership.
- Native/near native Auslan signer, Interpreter level or fluent in Auslan.
- Excellent written and verbal/signer communication skills, including the capacity to handle sensitive matters with tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent teaching practice.
- Experience in the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- A current NSW driver's licence.
- A first aid certificate.
- A working with children's check.
- A criminal record check; and
- You are obliged to become familiar with, and comply with child protection policies and legislation, as amended from time to time.

Compliance with child protection legislation is essential.
